James Brown, 64, Russell County, (1952-2016)

He was a retired Veteran of the US Army serving in Korea, Germany and Desert Storm and had the rank of E7. His wife, Margaret Yeatts Brown, survives. He leaves 10 direct living survivors.

The Kentucky Historical Society recently surprised author Ronald Wolford Blair. They gave him an opportunity to hold in his hands the jeweled sword that had been presented to Col. Frank Lane Wolford, downtown Lexington, on March 10, 1864 for his role in capturing Gen. John Hunt Morgan. Ronald Wolford Blair is Col. Wolford's Biographer and g,g, nephew. He has many Wolford & Blair relatives in Russell, Adair, and Casey Counties. Lindsey Wilson College will host the author at 3pmCT, Tuesday, September 13, 2016, at LWC's Norma & Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship, 402 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY, to discuss his new book on the life of Col. Frank Lane Wolford, entitled, Wild Wolf - The Great Civil War Rivalry. The event is a Kentucky Humanities Council and a Lindsey Writes Event. The Columbia City Council voted to hire Lisa Handy, the current chair of the Parks and Recreation Department, to be manager of the Jim Blair Park. The vote, on a recommendation by Mayor Curtis Hardwick, was unanimous. Handy will resign as Board Chair, the Council was told by Linda Waggener, a Council Member who is also a member of the Parks & Recreation Board.

Lindsey Wilson College Junior, Logan Adams, a Human Services & Counseling major from Somerset, KY has been selected as a College Debate 2016 Delegate. He will be a key part of a national, student-led conversation around the key issues that resonate with younger voters.

This first-of-its-kind initiative was created by Dominican University of California, a Voter Education Partner of the Commission on Presidential Debates. College Debate 2016 will draw on technology and social media to generate discussion of issues important to students, and to bring those issues to the attention of the moderators of the Presidential Debates this fall.

September is School Attendance Awareness Month in Columbia and Adair County per a proclamation signed Wednesday by Judge-Executive Mike Stephens and Mayor Curtis Hardwick. School administrators, staff, and other community leaders were on hand at the Adair Courthouse Annex for the proclamation's signing, as well as a few select students who did not miss a single day of school in 2015-16.

Basketball benefit proceeds will go toward funeral expenses

City Council approves 4 additional street projects

The Columbia City Council unanimously approved Mayor Curtis Hardwick's recommendation to add four additional street paving projects to the 2016 paving season.
  1. Corporate Drive - 84' long x 20' wide. Off Burkesville Loop toward Pyles Excavating.
  2. Grady Loop - 1,857' long and 13' wide.
  3. Short Street - 786' long and 20' wide. Start at Young Street and end at Waterworks Street
  4. Hemlock Circle - start at line (114) and end at Line at Taxus Street.
Mayor Hardwick said that projects are being added because there was money left over after the earlier, major repaving project was complete. The recommendation was approved on a motion by Council Member Craig Lasley with a seond by Council Member Mark Harris, with Council Members Linda Waggener, Craig Dean, Charles Grimsley, and Ronald Rogers affirming on a voice vote.

City has first reading for compensating tax rate

City Council meeting Tue 6 Sep 2016
Property tax budget estimate is $530,000. Alcoholic beverage sales tax receipts were approximately $8,000 for the month of July plus 2 days in June. City Clerk is estimating a leveling out of approximately $110,000 a year for the City, from sales alone, but license fees. Sales tax goes to law enforcement. License fees go to City General Fund

The Columbia City Council had a first reading to set the tax rate for 2016. The rate being considered, subject to possible adjustments at the second reading, is for a "compensating" tax rate. According to City Clerk Rhonda Loy, that is the rate the which would mean the same amount of tax would be paid by an individual if the assessment remains the same. The assessment is set by the Property Valuation Administrator.

City Council 6 Sep 2016: Breakthrough on right of way issue

Breakthrough on Right of way issue announced. Now sidewalks to the schools can proceed - application to the DOT simultaneously with grant writing and fund raising. Mary Anne Loy, Chair of the Columbia City Council sidewalk committee, received praise from Mayor Curtis Hardwick for her discovery of documentation that neither the state nor he and the City Attorney had been able to find; and the discovery resolves right of way questions on Greensburg street, giving the Mayor a clear path to make sidewalks all the way to the Adair County High School a reality in the not too distant future..

LWC Women's Golf in 6th place at SCAD Invitational

Covington, GA - The Lindsey Wilson women's golf team carded a team-total 308 to sit in sixth place following the opening round of the SCAD Atlanta (Ga.) Fall Invitational held at The Oaks Golf Club.

Tara Rodenhurst and Dacie Bolton paced the Blue Raiders during the first round as the duo carded 5-over par 76s at the par-71, 5,802-yard course to sit in a tie for 17th place.

Shayna Cockrill and Courtney Vincent both notched 7-over par 78s during the round as they are currently tied for 28th.

Ashley Strong completes the Blue Raider squad in 37th place after a 12-over par 83.

Kuhn, Jr. announced today that David Cary Ford, 54, of Louisville, Kentucky, was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison following his conviction on criminal counts of wire fraud and money laundering, stemming from Ford's actions while he was a practicing attorney and the executor of seven estates in Louisville.

Outhouse Ride At Green River Lake State Park 10 Sep 2016

Fundraising event for Trail System at GRL State Park

Campbellsville, KY - The Outhouse Ride, a group horseback ride, will be held on September 10, 2016 at 9amCT/10amET, to help raise money to maintain the trail system at Green River Lake State Park. The ride was started three years ago to assist in funding restroom facilities at a trail head area. Over the years enough money has been raised to provide gravel, wood for bridges, and additional restroom facilities.

The horseback event will be held at Green River Lake State Park trailhead and parking area on Robin Road off Lone Valley Road - before you get to Green River Stables at 592 Robin Road, Campbellsville, KY 42718, and is open to all horseback riders. A meal will be provided along with door prizes to winning participants. The cost for participation is $20.00 per person or $30.00 for couples.

FRANKFORT, KY (6 Sep 2016) - Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes today received a proclamation from Gov. Matt Bevin calling for a special election on November 8, 2016 in Kentucky's First Congressional District after U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield officially resigned the seat effective today.

The special election coincides with the General Election also being held on November 8.

The First Congressional District is made up of 35 counties and encompasses West Kentucky and parts of South Central Kentucky.

CHS students place high in AP course tests

When taking an AP exam, students are given a score from 1 to 5, with the scores 3, 4 and 5 being those scores that likely qualify for college credit.

Last school year, 59 students at CHS took AP courses. Those 59 students took a total of 96 exams at the end of those courses.
