The Columbia City Council voted to hire Lisa Handy, the current chair of the Parks and Recreation Department, to be manager of the Jim Blair Park. The vote, on a recommendation by Mayor Curtis Hardwick, was unanimous. Handy will resign as Board Chair, the Council was told by Linda Waggener, a Council Member who is also a member of the Parks & Recreation Board.

Damon Hicks will fill out term of Wes Feese on Parks & Recreation

In another related action, the board voted to approve Mayor Hardwick's recommendation to appoint Damon Hicks to fill out the unexpired term of Wes Feese, who resigned when he became Media Relations coordinator for the Adair County School District.

Little League representatives get receptive ear for help

Kevin Kessler & Jason Somerville of the Adair County Little League, presented a plea to the council to consider taking over the operation of the Joe Johnson Little League Park.

Kessler, President of the Adair County Little League told the council that the Little League continues to serve a large number of girls and boys, that the overall numbers benefitting from the program is growing slightly. Somerville noted that the participants' ages are now skewing to younger kids. He said that the travelling teams take some of the older kids from the Little League Programs.

Both noted that there are fewer adult volunteers to keep the Little League Park going today and in the early years when the late Joe Johnson oversaw the organization. Today, they said, umpires are paid, rather than volunteers. A financial statement entry showed the cost for umpires was $3,745.

Kessler said that those volunteers who continue their service at no pay and the parents who support the organization spend a lot of their time on fundraisers, as many as six major ones a year. Concession workers, at one time volunteers, were paid $3,536.56

The asked that the the Little League Park be taken over by Parks & Recreation, the City, the County, or a combination to provide the basic financing of the park.

Mayor appoints committee

Mayor Hardwick said that the City would look into the suggested arrangement or a variation, and, on a motion by Ronald Rogers, with a second by Craig Lasley, the Council approved the idea 6-0. Mayor Hardwick then appointed an all-male committee to study the situation - himself, "the two Craigs, and Ronald Rogers," to look into the matter.
