Thinks it's time for Historic Courthouse trees to go

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
Beautiful courthouse photo - except for a large not well pruned tree obscuring the stately image. I like trees, but when this tree was planted, it was much smaller and did not detract from the grandeur of the building. It is now an ugly tree in my opinion and its roots probably are not good for the foundation. Likewise the other side of the courthouse. Good landscaping says lots about how Columbia/Adair County is perceived. - Vonnie Kolbenschlag

Letter: Comment on Randy Young's notions

Chris Oliver writes:
I'd like to thank Mr. Young for taking the time to provide his statistics. While I disagree with the notion that our young people will not be carded after this legislation passes on March 22nd, I do agree with him on something more important. That being, legislating a product that is legal to purchase, possess, and consume in such a widespread manner will not completely control it's consumption among those without these legal rights.

Fortunately, most of the nation figured this out the hard way in 1933. - Chris Oliver

Shannon Sexton: Writing as individual, not as chair of PAC

An avowed Christian who answers to the highest power, Shannon Sexton writes: 'I am strong in my beliefs and I require approval from only one, whose name is certainly not anonymous . . . ' and later adds, in this candid autobiographical sketch, ''Dry County only means alcohol is sold illegally instead of legally. Want to keep your kids away from it? Regulate it - lawfully. I bought alcohol from a bootlegger at 15. Should I assume they wouldn't sell to my underage kid or yours? I'm not that naive.'

Writing as a private citizen, in response to the person who questioned her beliefs, signing her/his attack "Anonymous." The letter was received on February 4, 2016.

Are you Christians? That was the question posed to me in an anonymous letter I received today.

I've made it very clear that PAC is willing to discuss economic issues, however we will not discuss religion, the bible or anyone's interpretation of. I'm making this post not as PAC Chair, but as myself, a regular everyday citizen of Adair County.

Billy Joe Fudge: This Wet/Dry Issue is about freedom

'I am concerned by the intentions and actions of those who wave Ol' Glory and laud the Constitutional protection of the right to assemble, the right to hold and bear arms, the right to free speech, the right to religious freedom, the freedom of the press, et al; yet at the same time are willing to limit the right of their next door neighbor, their many friends and even their fellow church members to legally purchase a product which is deemed legal by almost all levels of our society and government.' - BILLY JOE FUDGE

Personal commentary

Friends and neighbors, somehow we can't seem to grasp that this wet/dry issue is about freedom, constitutional rights and the responsibility of the individual as to his or her relationship with God.

Our founders trusted their Creator and His Wisdom in setting us free from "the law" and because of that trust, designed the Constitution with the idea that if God would empower us with the freedom to choose between righteous living and unrighteous living then they (the founders) would empower us with that same "inalienable right".

Commentary: Thinks other counties affect Marion

Personal commentary by Shannon Sexton

I think the Adair Family Values Graphic Ad is a bit misleading. I'd like to add some information that the citizens of Adair Co. may find interesting.

Their ad shows quite a difference in Alcohol related crashes and deaths from 1995-2014 in Adair and Marion Co. [See Competing Statistics 1: Alcohol related vehicle crashes] Wonder how many of those Marion Co. alcohol related collisions and deaths are people from another county? From our county? Of course there is no statistics to reveal those numbers. Once can only assume based on other facts.

Michael Regan wonders if Yes-er stole his No sign

By Michael Regan
Personal commentary

Good morning to all. It's a very beautiful, early Spring morning. We're blessed to open our eyes to once again to the miracle of creation. "Let them that have eyes see"; Romans.

So, as I cruised our yard, following the doggies on their morning constitutional, I passed by the roadside at the end of our driveway where I had placed a very discreet "VOTE NO" sign a kind friend had provided for me.

FRANKFORT, KY (27 Feb 2016) - Each day as we go about our busy daily lives, it becomes all too easy to forget how blessed we truly are, and how much we take for granted. Our community firefighters, police, and EMS professionals, without hesitation, answer the call when we need aid and protection. Not only do these individuals deserve our thanks and praise in a particular instance of heroism, but we have a duty to stand in support of these brave men and women in their hours of need as well. That is why we in the Senate made it our priority to ensure that their state government honors the sacrifices they make each day.

Ms. Fudge's comments are a good idea, if they were carried out. I can not see our schools doing this for the whole day.

If they were to decide to do this then they should do it for Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Martin Luther King Day. They actually take two day for Thanksgiving. I also can not see our system doing this either.

Big Harp, Little Harp, and Billie Potts

In December 1811 while the Lewis brothers were butchering and burning the slave George on the first night of the New Madrid earthquake, an alarming man-made portent was making its belching, whooping way past Rocky Hill down the Ohio headed for New Orleans.

Nicholas Roosevelt, shipbuilder, was aboard The New Orleans, the first steamboat to steam from Pittsburg to New Orleans -- proving to his partners, Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston, that such a vessel could navigate the rough, western rivers as well as the placid Hudson
