Commentary: About PAC's refusal to debate

Comments re: article 81329 PAC respectfully declines debate with AFV: we're all Christians

Personal commentary by Doug Peterson

I was sorry to see that Ms. Shannon Sexton and her PAC organization (funded by who?), chose to decline from a radio debate from her "opposition" - the Adair Family Values people. I would like to express some thoughts on her response, based on the paragraphs she wrote.

  1. The "Progress in Adair County (PAC)" is definitely a misnomer and a bias. It claims all these wonderful terms for how it represents itself, yet brands the Adair Family Values as just "faith based" or "religious". Is PAC not faith based? The Adair Family Values group is more than just faith based, but also concerned about family values, community values, proper economic concerns and protection of the community and county we love.

  2. How can we really know how to "fundamentally disagree" on what is best, unless we actually get together to discuss and debate the issues and come to a common understanding. I also disagree in your phrase that "we are all Christians." Many here in Adair county attend churches from many faiths and denominations, and many do not. But that does not make them all Christians. I wonder what your definition of "Christian" is?

  3. A "neighboring county"? Which one? "Tore apart"? Please clarify. Why not tell us all the truth and let us (both sides) make our own determination on the truth, not just one person's opinion.

  4. Personal attacks. From reading the many comments (many from you specifically) in the media, I find the majority of the biased opinions and rude comments have come from the "Yes" camp, criticizing those rudely to those who want to discuss the issues but are arrogantly put down for their concerns. I think the poor attitudes and denial of rights of others to ask for and examine unbiased facts is almost dictatorial in nature. History has shown (including Nazi Germany, Communist Soviet Union, Socialist Red China, and North Korea for examples) that when groups push a certain attitude and opinion, denying the full evidence and accusing the other side of hate and bias, that no-one wins and all suffer. When the PAC first got started with much misinformation, it made the brash assumption in its press releases, that it knew better than anyone else that they thought were right and those in opposition or where concerned were wrong or ignorant.

  5. Shannon also stated "Our group...PAC has held firm that we will not argue religion, the Bible, or anyone's interpretation of." "Our group.." ?? Who is the PAC group? Who founded it, and who is funding it? Who appointed you as its Chair? Let's be honest and open on who or what is involved in this, and why.

  6. The community is already divided !! When you pit religion, those of "faith" (your words), of those of the Bible, against those not for PAC's purposes, you have divided the community already. Many opposed to PAC's goals are concerned for other reasons, rather than for religious reasons.

  7. Finally Ms. Sexton, as Chair of the PAC, why won't you be open to and welcome a public debate forum before the community? What are you afraid of? One of the strengths of our nation and its democracy is the reality that all people are created equal, and have a right to equal access of information concerning truth and knowledge about both sides of any issue. Allow the voters to make informed decisions after hearing all the arguments, evidence, and discussions on both sides.
