Happy's followers were loyal, none more so than Will Bennett

Thanks for the McConnell lecture video. The mention of Happy Chandler brings to mind the 1959 governors election.

There was always much discussion of political happenings at Dad\'s store. Will Bennett was the most loyal Chandler supporter in the area. I recall him resolutely telling my Dad, "Stanley, If Bert Combs would pave a road to my door in solid gold, I would vote for Happy Chandler." That's loyalty.

Breakfast and story telling -- this day about biscuit making

By Linda Waggener

Breakfast at our house this morning was sinfully good after a week of eating more sensibly.

Mom and I thought we'd done right well frying chicken the way we did in the old days, making biscuits and white gravy to go with it. Ed teased us about small flaws (like cooking chicken breasts instead of his favorite thighs) but we noticed he thoroughly cleaned his plate.

As often happens -- my favorite times -- the menu and work of preparation resulted in story telling over the eating of the meal.

Critique of Epicurean Kentuckian: Linda & Geniece's fried chicken

Comments re photo 64229 Epicurean Kentuckian Linda Genieces Sulphur Well Fried Chicken

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Your very descriptive description and discussion of the nuances of the TV show and chicken are superb but there are glaring omissions in your presentation concerning the sweetness of color on the East and what appears to be some sort of skillet produced foundation supporting mountainous clouds of gravy on the West of the most luscious chicken.- Billy Joe Fudge
Thanks for reminding, though that was intentional - I politely asked the womenfolk to go shoot a squirrel, as I'm partial to Squirrel Gravy at this time of the year. They didn't. I didn't want to make a scene. Ate the chicken gravy to be polite. But thought I'd show them who's in charge by just not mentioning the gravy. By the way, how do you handle womenfolk who won't bring in a squirrel when told to do so? I'll bet you one thing: I bet Tim Farmer's wife would been back with a cleaned squirrel in 15 minutes. - EW

Powerball jackpot for Wed 13 Jackpot grows to $1.3 billion

And that prompts a question: What would you do if you won the lottery? One of the things the writer would do would be spend a little to make the "dangerous-est place there is" to walk, safe for Melvin C. & thee & me. - EW
Kentucky Lottery

By Ed Waggener

Nobody won the Powerball Jackpot Saturday night, 09 Jan 2016. The jackpot for Wed 13 Jan 2016, is already $1.3 Billion dollars, enough to live pretty big and still do a lot of good in the neighborhood.

It's expected that the frenzied buying surrounding the huge jackpot will drive the jackpot even further into record territory.

We wonder at CM what good works one would do with this kind of money?

Tom recounts the duel between Major Watkins and Uncle Johnny B. as to which man could eat the most flapjacks. A hundred men came to the contest and Uncle Johnny B. won and promised to support Major Watkins in his race for state senate, a promise he kept even after the Major’s nephew entered the race. Cyrus Edwards on the Elizabeth Wilson Family,
Including an Account of a Fearsome Duel

Many of the details of the early days in Hart and Barren counties would be lost were it not for the stories of Cyrus Edwards (1846-1939) gathered into published form by his daughter Florence Edwards Gardiner in the year following her father's death.

From this book, Cyrus Edwards' Stories of Early Days, published in 1940 and reissued by the South Central Kentucky Historical Society of Glasgow and the Hart County Historical Society three times by 1981 we learn of the importance of Elizabeth Wilson and her family to the beginnings of Horse Cave more than two centuries ago.
