LWC Wrestling finishes eighth at NWCA National Duals

By Charles Balcom

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team wrapped up competition at the National Wrestling Coaches' Association National Duals with an eighth-place finish at the 16-team tournament on Saturday, January 9, 2016.

The 14th-ranked Blue Raiders opened the day with a tight 21-18 loss to No. 7-ranked Oklahoma City to fall into the seventh-place match where they met No. 8-ranked Concordia (NE) for the second time in the tournament. Lindsey Wilson topped the Bulldogs yesterday by a 19-18 margin after the Blue Raiders earned the winning point based on the tiebreaker criteria. The dual on Friday was tied 18-18 after the 10 matches, but a pin at 149 pounds was the determining factor in awarding Lindsey Wilson the win.

It would be a different story on Saturday as this time Concordia would emerge victorious 19-15, sending the Blue Raiders to an eighth-place finish at a tournament that featured 13 teams ranked in the NAIA Coaches' Top 20 Poll, including nine of the top 10 teams.

Lindsey Wilson started the day by dropping a tightly contested match to Oklahoma City. The Blue Raiders led 14-9 after the first seven weight classes, but a pair of late pins helped turn the tide in favor of the Stars.

Oklahoma City struck first as No. 14-ranked Adam Gaines was able to hold off Chad Lampe in a 7-5 decision at the 125-pound weight class to take a 3-0 match lead.

From there, the Blue Raiders began to roll as Lindsey Wilson captured the next four matches to take a 13-3 advantage.

Brady Moser started the run with a 5-3 decision upset win over No. 8-ranked Parker Bohannon at the 133-pound weight class. Sixth-ranked Daniel Leonard then took down 16th-ranked James Landoll with a 15-3 major decision at 141 pounds to make it 7-3.

Evan Loe followed with an 8-5 decision over Brock Williams at 149 pounds and Bryce Hoffman capped off the run with a 9-4 decision victory over Eric Ambriz in the 157-pound match to make it 13-3.

The Stars significantly cut into the Blue Raider lead after Diorian Coleman was disqualified at the 165-pound match, giving the win to No. 2-ranked Ricky McCarty to make it 13-9. Lindsey Wilson was also hit with a two-point flagrant and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the match to make it an 11-9 contest.

Rhodes Bell got the Blue Raiders back on the right track after he upset 10th-ranked Jamie Shawver at the 174-pound class, using a takedown in overtime to win SV-1 3-1.

The Stars took their first lead of the day after eighth-ranked Derek Siversten pinned Lucas Miozza in the 184-pound match in two minutes and 24 seconds to make it a 15-14 advantage for Oklahoma City.

Cody Siversten then followed with a pin of Kohl Dodd at 197 pounds in one minute and 58 seconds to push the lead to 21-14 with just one match to go, mathematically sealing the victory for Oklahoma City.

Sixth-ranked Chico Adams ended the dual with a win for the Blue Raiders at 285 pounds as he took a 12-3 major decision over Bryson McGowan, but Oklahoma City had done enough to win the dual 21-18, and sent the Blue Raiders into the seventh-place match.

In that seventh-place, the Blue Raiders took on the Bulldogs of Concordia for the second time in as many days. Multiple weight classes saw a repeat matchup from Friday.

James Flint once again met Dmitri Smith in the 125-pound match, and just like on Friday, Smith got the better of Flint winning in a tight 3-2 decision to put Concordia ahead 3-0.

Moser and Kyle Carey met again in the 133-pound class, and Moser grabbed an 11-4 decision win to even things at 3-3 in the dual, his second victory of the tournament over Carey.

Eighth-ranked Andrew Schulte topped sixth-ranked Leonard at 141 pounds with an overtime TB-1 2-1 victory to put the Bulldogs back ahead 6-3. It marked the second day in a row Leonard fell in a tight match to Schulte.

After pinning Foster Bunce yesterday, Loe picked up a 4-2 decision win on Saturday at 149 points to once again level the match at 6-6.

Jr Lule put Concordia back out front with an 18-0 technical fall over Avery Martin at 157 pounds to make it an 11-6 dual. Hoffman, who typically competes at the 157 class, wrestled up a weight at 165, but he fell in an 8-2 decision to Austin Starkey to make it 14-6.

Bell grabbed a win for the Blue Raiders at 174 pounds as he took down 11th-ranked Tommy Bailey in a TB-1 4-3 victory to trim the lead to 14-9.

A 22-3 technical fall at the 184-pound class made it 19-9 in favor of the Bulldogs. Dodd defeated Alexander Reimers with a 3-1 decision at 197 pounds, but it only trimmed the gap to 19-12 with one match to wrestle, mathematically sealing the win for Concordia.

The 285 class again saw sixth-ranked Adams take down fifth-ranked Ceron Francisco, this time winning 4-2 to bring the final total to 19-15 in favor of the Bulldogs. Charles Balcom, the writer, is Assistant Sports Information Director at Lindsey Wilson College
