Letter: Confusion abounds

Jon Halsey writes:
I'm confused (seems to be the normal state lately). Kynect announced on Friday, October 9th that due to high costs and lack of support from the AHCA, it was going out of business effective 12/31/2015. The purported plan was that individuals enrolling for 2016 would be steered to private insurance plans. Evidently something has changed but what? --Jon Halsey, Knifley
Jon, Thanks for writing. You confused us for a moment as well. But the announcement you refer to wasn't made by kynect.

kynect, formerly and also called the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange, is a health insurance marketplace, which provides a web site where Kentuckians can compare and enroll in different insurance policies. (Wikipedia on exchanges).

Kentucky Health Cooperative is a Louisville-based insurance co-op that was one of seven insurance companies to offer insurance to Kentuckians through the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange.

Kentucky Health Cooperative did announce it was going out of business in October, which will require it’s roughly 50,000 members to seek insurance from one of the six other providers who offer health insurance on Kentucky's exchange. For affected Kentucky Health Cooperative members, KHC has issued a list of Frequently Asked Questions (PDF), which does in part address their financial troubles.

Two more families reunited with their dogs

If dogs have souls - and we'll let you adhere to your own theology on that - there have been hallelujah hounds up in heaven. Maybe Disney doesn't have time for every one of these one minute Happy Stories from the classifieds - but we do. - EW

From Kim Sallee

Yet two more families have been reunited with their pets. Both were joyous events for all of us here at Green River Animal Shelter, and we want you to join in with your own celebration.

First was CM Classified Listing No. 14520, listed simply as "Cute little dog is lost and needs to find his way back home."

Over this past weekend it happened - or at least, his owners found him. They are reunited.

It's a reminder to everyone in Adair County, and often in Green County, as well - Animal Control there brings dogs nabbed over there to the Columbia shelter - that if your dog is missing, please contact Green River Animal Shelter, at 455 Appleby Drive, Columbia, KY, at 270-385-9655 Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-5pmCT and Saturdays 10am-2pmCT. Thanks, - KIM SALLEE - Director.

News from the KY Department of Financial Institutions

FRANKFORT, KY (13 Nov 2015) - The Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) today issued an advisory reminding investors to be cautious when considering investing in three products recently making news: marijuana-related investments, binary options and digital currency.

"What these three very different products have in common is their recent emergence as investments that both sellers and buyers hope will become the 'next big thing,'" said DFI Securities Division Director Shonita Bossier. "We wanted to alert Kentuckians in the event they are approached regarding these types of investments. Before investing, the investor needs to understand what the product is, its benefits and its risks."

Two articles, two sides on Kynect, Medicaid expansion

Here are links to articles on a major issue to all Kentuckians from the office of outgoing Governor Steve Beshear and a response from Governor-elect Matt Bevin's Transition Team:

  1. Governor Beshear's statement that Kentucky can afford Kynect and Medicaid Expansion, with analysis concluding that state will have a net positive financial position of $300.2 million by Fiscal Year 17-18 if plan continued. See: Gov. Beshear: Kentucky Can Afford Kynect, Medicaid Expansion

  2. A briefer response from Gov.-elect Bevin's Transition Team saying, ""Governor-Elect Bevin has laid out a health care vision for Kentucky that will encourage personal responsibility and focus on expanding access to quality, affordable health care coverage. His administration will move forward in addressing Kentucky's health care needs in a deliberate and thoughtful fashion, consulting with Kentucky's health care stakeholders, his Cabinet appointees and the General Assembly . . . Bevin Transition Office responds to Gov. Beshear

Gov. Beshear's Health Care Press Conference

From Jessica Ditto, Communications Director
News from Governor-Elect Bevin's Office

FRANKFORT, KY - The following is a statement from Jessica Ditto, Communications Director for Governor-Elect Bevin's Transition Team, in response to Governor Beshear's health care press conference:

"Governor-Elect Bevin's immediate priority is forming the new administration and preparing the executive budget.

"Governor-Elect Bevin has laid out a health care vision for Kentucky that will encourage personal responsibility and focus on expanding access to quality, affordable health care coverage. His administration will move forward in addressing Kentucky's health care needs in a deliberate and thoughtful fashion, consulting with Kentucky's health care stakeholders, his Cabinet appointees and the General Assembly.

"Governor Beshear has three more weeks in office and is responsible for this open enrollment period. His most serious challenge is to re-enroll the 51,000 Kentuckians who are losing coverage due to the collapse of the Kentucky Health Cooperative. Those Kentuckians know first-hand the failures of Obamacare. The urgent task of re-enrolling Kentuckians who lost coverage remains firmly in Governor Beshear's court.

The time for politics is over. Governor Bevin promised Kentuckians a fresh start and he is working every day to deliver on that promise."

Gov. Beshear: Kentucky Can Afford Kynect, Medicaid Expansion

Access to health coverage helping to chisel away at generational health problems

From Terry Sebastian and Jennifer Brislin
Gov. Steve Beshear's Communications Office

FRANKFORT, KY (13 Nov 2015) - Making an evidence-based case that Kentucky needs to continue its transformative and nation-leading health reform efforts, Gov. Steve Beshear joined health-care advocates today to talk about steady improvements in noted health measures as well as the hugely positive economic impact for the medical industry.

Among other things, Gov. Beshear cited progress on health statistics under the kyhealthnow initiative as well as the addition of almost $3 billion in direct revenue to Kentucky providers as reasons to continue the two programs through which over half a million Kentuckians have accessed health coverage - what's known as "Medicaid expansion" and kynect, the Commonwealth's state-based Health Benefit Exchange.
