Letter: Confusion abounds Jon Halsey writes: I'm confused (seems to be the normal state lately). Kynect announced on Friday, October 9th that due to high costs and lack of support from the AHCA, it was going out of business effective 12/31/2015. The purported plan was that individuals enrolling for 2016 would be steered to private insurance plans. Evidently something has changed but what? --Jon Halsey, KnifleyJon, Thanks for writing. You confused us for a moment as well. But the announcement you refer to wasn't made by kynect. kynect, formerly and also called the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange, is a health insurance marketplace, which provides a web site where Kentuckians can compare and enroll in different insurance policies. (Wikipedia on exchanges). Kentucky Health Cooperative is a Louisville-based insurance co-op that was one of seven insurance companies to offer insurance to Kentuckians through the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange. Kentucky Health Cooperative did announce it was going out of business in October, which will require it’s roughly 50,000 members to seek insurance from one of the six other providers who offer health insurance on Kentucky's exchange. For affected Kentucky Health Cooperative members, KHC has issued a list of Frequently Asked Questions (PDF), which does in part address their financial troubles.
