Comments re article 65216 Janice Holt Giles inducted into KY Writers Hall of Fame Floyd R Cox writes:
My grandfather, Samuel green Cox, was born in Casey Creek (Roley), Ky, before moving to Arkansas in 1892, and I am a close friend of Linda Neat Keeney now of Indianapolis. I would be interested in when your next gathering will be at the Holt/Giles log home. Dad was born three years before Janice Holt. Here is my link to Littleberry Cox, whose son, William, lived at Casey Creek: littleberrycox.com - Floyd R Cox
Thanks, Mr. Cox: We'll post this and perhaps someone will send a note of the next event there.

Ruth Hadley at Ambassador Awards

2015-10-18 - Frankfort, KY - Photo from Dale Hollow Resort Park marketing.
Ruth Hadley, received the Ambassador Award for Professional Achievement, center, Department of Parks within the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet. She obtained a Bachelor's degree from Lindsey Wilson College, majoring in criminal justice, despite tremendous obstacles, commitments and a full-time job as a serving attendant at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park. She was a non-traditional student who decided to pursue higher education when her youngest child started college. While a daughter and son-in-law were both deployed on active duty in Kuwait, she raised her two grandsons for a year. She cared for a terminally ill parent in her home. Her hectic full-time schedule in hospitality often required long hours and weekends. Ruth's victory over obstacles for professional achievement stands as testimony to perseverance and is an inspiration to her coworkers. The Glens Fork, Adair County resident is now marketing manager at Dale Hollow Resort Park. At left, Elaine Walker, Commissioner of Kentucky State Parks, and at right Bob Stewart, Secretary of the Tourism Cabinet.

Letter: Public Rectangle

Guy Babin writes:
Ed,

To my uncalibrated eyeball, it appears our lovely town square is not a square after all, but a lovely perfect rectangle.

I didn't do the math to confirm the perfect ratio however--as our town "shape" is lovely no matter the actual geometry.

Wishes there were time lapsed aerial views of Columbia

Ann Curtis writes:
I'm really enjoying the aerial views of Columbia! Wouldn't it have been great to have had these over the decades to watch the changes to the landscape? Sort of like the photos from space showing the loss of the polar ice cap and rainforests.

I wish I could see an overhead shot of the top of Jamestown Hill, with the changes UCB has made to our house and surroundings. I keep straining to see beyond the edges of the photos, but they never quite reach that far.

I appreciated the Coburg photos, too. I alerted the cousins, especially Reade Heskamp, who at age 88, said he preferred the Coburg of his memories. There was a good view of the homeplace, though.

Thanks for publishing these great pictures! ~ Ann

Mike Watson: Jason Mardis aerial like original 1802 town plat

Mike Watson writes:
Ed, the aerial photography by Jason Mardis is exceptional. All of the photos have been great, but the one on CM today of the Columbia Public Square from above the Historic Courthouse is my favorite. It reminds me of the original town plat, drawn in 1802 by William McNeely, the county surveyor. MW

Aerial views, Downtown Columbia, KY 18 Oct 2015

Click on headline for a three photo aerial album by Jason Mardis

Ed Waggener

Jason Mardis sends what may be everyone's favorite aerial shot today: The centerpiece is a map-like photo precisely centered over the Historic Adair County Court house, with Jamestown and Greensburg Streets providing the horizontal axis and Campbellsville and Burkesville the vertical one.

Also included in this set of three are 1) Closer up to the Clocktower than has been seen in a long, long time by anything other than a pigeon, and 2) A dawn look out Jamestown Street, with fog over Russell Creek giving a perspective of Russell Creek's embrace of the City. 3) An early morning photo of the Iconic Towers of Columbia, KY

JIM: 100 years ago, mid October 1915

Snow and heavy rains plagued Adair County 100 years ago about this time of year, as today, it was a time of a great many revivals and church news was big; the Sandusky Brothers, agents for Ford automobiles, advertised a car for $461; a new planing mill was built in White City; and Lindsey Wilson was preparing for its first-ever football game, set for October 23, 2015
Click on headline for news of Adair County 100 years ago.

By JIM

Mid-October 1915 found Adair County in the midst of a cold snap with long time News correspondent W.M. Wilmore reporting snow within the metes and bounds of Gradyville. Preceding the snow, heavy rains had fallen. The paper reported "Pelham Branch was higher last week than ever known before," and Mr. Wilmore stated the same about Big Creek. Weather notwithstanding, there were enough goings-on reported in the October 13th edition to sate the heartiest of news appetites.

The Fiscal Court had just spent thirty-five hundred dollars on road equipment, most notably a roller, engine, grader, and rock crusher, and openly congratulated itself for making a shrewd deal. The News, ever a champion of improved transportation, endorsed the expenditure, optimistically opining "the outlook is good for making better roads in Adair County."

Tom Chaney: Literature and the Plague

Of Writers And Their Books: Literature and the Plague. Tom discusses Katherine Anne Porter who in 1939 published the novella Pale Horse, Pale Rider in which she recounted her pull toward death from influence. This column first appeared 21 November 2010.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: The First Black Novel (More than Likely)

By Tom Chaney

Literature and the Plague

A few weeks back I wrote about John M. Barry's compelling study of The Great Influenza. I was struck, as was he, by how few writers in their fiction have dealt directly with the influenza epidemic.

Mary McCarthy lost both parents in November 1918. "She said almost nothing of the epidemic." John Dos Passos was ill with influenza in his early twenties. He barely alludes to it in his fiction. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner pretty much ignore it.

Only Katherine Anne Porter meets the monster head on. She was a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver when both she and her fiancé contracted the disease.
