Mike Wilson: Judge Frank says Newt flag incident a snap failure

CJE's investigation finds no intended message, just an unfortunate coincidence

By Mike Wilson
WAVE FM 92.7 and The BIG DAWG, FM 99

Late Thursday afternoon, April 2, 2015, Green County Judge John Frank called. He had sent the Road Foreman & Magistrate Charles Judd to check on the American Flag flying upside down at a Newt, Green County Cemetery.

Judge Frank did not think that the flag had been vandalized after all. Apparently, someone had raised the flag, pulled it up wrong and a snap had broken in the winds, causing the unfortunate coincidence.

Marsha Walker writes:
I agree with the writer. In the daytime the lights can be barely visible, especially if the wind is blowing. The lights are less visible when tilted at an angle. Drivers need larger and brighter lights to be safe. The intersection saddens me when I drive by at least once daily. - Marsha Walker

KY Afield Outdoors: Spring is prime time for trophy bass

This is the fifth installment of the "Spring Fishing Fever" series of fishing articles. Produced by the Kentucky Afield Outdoors staff, the series details productive fishing opportunities across Kentucky.

By: Kevin Kelly

FRANKFORT, KY - A winter back-loaded with cold, snow and high water can make the season's stay seem unusually long and especially harsh.

The first warm days of the year never come soon enough. But when they do, a feeling of euphoria sweeps over anglers because springtime offers some of the year's best opportunities for trophy largemouth bass.

"Fall is a great opportunity to catch a big one, but your best shot at the biggest bass of the year or your life is right now," said Geoff Roberts, a conservation educator with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and an avid bass angler.

Willard Pritchard: Warning lights hard to see in daytime

Valid questions raised in this commentary by Willard Pritchard remind us that many have wondered about the numbers of accidents on the Bypass which have occurred in the daytime, when lights are hard to see, vs. nighttime accidents? How many of the nine fatalities occurred at night. How many of the 47 accidents were at night, how many in the daytime? (statistics courtesy Jason Cross).

From Willard Pritchard

I along with many others I am saddened by the recent accident at the corner of the Bypass and Burkesville Road, Columbia, KY.

Monday I was traveling east on the bypass and as I approached this intersection I noticed that the red signal lights were not noticeable. They were very dim. It was 12:30 PM and a clear sky.

Butterflies and herbicides & a super idea from Joyce M. Coomer

Entrepreneurship 101: Make and sell signs to stop roadside spraying which will be a let herbicide sprayers know not to spray, that you care about the environment!
(To LOCAL Yard Sign Manufacturers who produce the signs within the 7-County area: Please let us know when you have one to offer. If it's Joyce Coomer approved, we'll give complimentary, free-gratis-for-nothing, publicity. From one who's seen the Lincoln County brownouts from herbicide spraying, who almost wept at the brownout spraying in Green County, KY. Can't wait for Joyce's idea to take hold nationwide. - ED WAGGENER, Tree Hugger.)

By Joyce Coomer

Since the fiscal court is going ahead with the health and environment damaging plan of spraying herbicides where mowing is awkward, and since the garden club is inspiring people to establish plants beneficial to monarch butterflies (as well as a lot of other butterflies), I have an idea for some enterprising group.

. . . make and sell orange stakes with a large monarch butterfly on the top. These stakes could be placed along property lines where people have established areas beneficial to monarch butterflies and would be a signal to anyone who is spraying herbicides (or pesticides) that the property owners are working to have their place become a haven for butterflies, and would like to avoid herbicide and pesticide use on their property.

T. Neal: Fixing the Intersection

A plain and simple 4-way stop is his solution, though he admits that the underlying problem, human error, will persist and cannot, he says, be fixed

By T. Neal
Personal commentary

There is no way to make this spot one hundred percent safe.

There is an underlying factor that will persist that cannot be fixed, that is the human error factor.

A fancy circle in the middle might slow and help, but a plain and simple 4 way stop will do just as much good at that location.
