I do not know how many lives have been taken at 61 bypass, but even one is one too many. The past two or three weekends have resulted in accidents at the intersection.

I know people are texting while driving, eating while driving, talking while driving, but what makes this intersection worse than others?

Heather Evans: Agrees with Mary Ann Brown response

Heather Evans writes:
I have to say I agree. There are a lot of intersections in Adair County. Do they all need rumble strips?!? A warning that a stop light was ahead?!? Come on! Wake up and drive without distractions such as cell phones and putting on your makeup. In my opinion that intersection is clear and visible. It's a terrible tragedy for both parties. But please stop blaming the bypass!!! It is a drivers responsibility to pay attention! My only suggestion, not that people would obey, would be to lower the speed limit or lower it before the intersection. - HEATHER EVANS

Says families of Bypass Fatalities would say Shut it Down

Says it is a death trap. Suggests changes which might cost a little money, and asks: How can you put a price on a human life?

By Diana Long
Personal commentary

Too many lives have been lost due to that intersection! Too many have been injured as well. This intersection is nothing but a death trap. Ask the families that have suffered a loss due to the intersection I would bet they would tell you the solution would be shut it down!<

Vicky Pike: Agrees. Limits need to be set on utility bills

Cites a huge $900 plus water bill she received a couple of weeks ago from CAUD
Comments about: Comments re article 74194 Letter ColumbiaAdair Utilities

By Victoria Pike

I agree that something needs to be done to limit a customers liability in the water situation. I too had a call about a $900 plus water bill about two weeks ago. They did get me. However, I still have a huge water bill to pay. I was told by Lenny Stone there would be an adjustment to it but haven't talked to the secretary to see how much the adjustment will be.

Happy Tail: Richard Damboise, a hard working man

'I have no doubt that Richie is in heaven caring for the babies until their parents arrive. I know too that he's not sitting still. He's doing something for someone and enjoying his Moxie and peanut butter cups. He's also talking to his two sons and waiting for Del to join him. Hopefully his days of milking cows and cleaning stalls are over but if I know him he would be glad to be doing that too. Rest in Peace Richie Damboise. Don't work too hard.' - PEG SCHAEFFER

When I worked at Norwich Hospital in CT there was a man who worked in the housekeeping department. Richie Damboise was one of the hardest working people you would ever meet. He was always on the go. When Norwich Hospital closed Richie retired. But just because he retired from Norwich Hospital it doesn't mean he "retired."

How many have to die at the Bypass intersections . . .

. . . before the focus in this county shifts from unnecessary new road construction to improving safety on the most recent road construction in the county?

Personal commentary

Several years ago, when Greg and I bought our first new vehicle, several people asked me (as I was the primary driver of said vehicle) if I was afraid of having a wreck and damaging it because of so many people's haphazard driving habits. My reply was that I figured the safest way to drive around town was to assume there was going to be a bomb dropped in front of me any second so I watch traffic flow and my driving.

Letter: Columbia/Adair Utilities

Brenda McCoy Harvey writes:
During the really cold weather and snow my husband was pretty much unable to walk. We are still trying through Vanderbilt to get a diagnosis.

I noticed our water pressure was not as strong as usual. I bundled up and went out and checked his garage and all was good. Then I headed out to the barn and I could hear the water. The barn was a mud pit of water. The faucet had frozen and flew off and full force of water spraying everywhere. I had someone come out and plug the barn water. When something like this happened in past years, like a hose break while filling horse tanks, the water company always called and told me my water meter was really spinning and I had better go check on it. This time we missed the call. I have a water bill of $565. I called the water office and she said there a note on our account saying someone called our house and got no answer. I wish so much she had at least left a message!!! --Brenda McCoy Harvey

Note: We sympathize. We'd like to propose a law limiting any consumer service bill to no greater than 3x a 12-month average, without written consent from the consumer for the specific overage. Shifting the burden to the organization when usage is way outside a normal range would effectively end stories of runaway water and phone bills. --Pen

Tom Chaney: Billboard Dreaming

Of Writers And Their Books: Billboard Dreaming. Tom dreams of unwritten books half read and of billboards flapping their messages in a thunderstorm of tatters. This column first appeared 28 March 2010.

By Tom Chaney

I been dreaming about reading books and billboards -- from a song my mother used to sing.
When I was walking down the street, a billboard caught my eye.
The advertisements written there would make you laugh and cry.
The sign was torn and tattered from the storm the night before,
And as I gazed upon it, well, this is what I saw re:

Smoke Coca-Cola cigarettes. Drink Wrigley's Spearmint beer.
Ken-L-Ration dog food makes your wife's complexion clear.
Chew chocolate-covered mothballs -- they're sure to satisfy.
Brush your teeth with Lifebuoy soap and watch the suds go by.

Mary Ann Brown: Drivers should single-task: just drive

Personal commentary

Mary Ann Brown writes:
My opinion is that people (drivers) got to get back to JUST driving forget the radio, the cell phone, the cigarettes, food, drinking, texting and for God's sake please put on your thinking caps when you are the one operating the vehicle.

Our minds are not totally on driving and this is costing some people their lives. If one does not believe this start to notice people on the roads when you are stopped at a stop sign, red light and look at driver's faces they are out in lala land not in the vehicle that evident some give the appearance they should not be driving a vehicle at all.

At that point in time they are a danger to themselves and others on the road at the same time. --Mary Ann Brown
