Walter (Garnett) Baker, 88, Adair Co., KY (1926-2015)

"During his life, Garnett was founder of the Portland country store which later became known as Kessler's Grocery. He was a traveling salesman for Stull Seed Corn to farmers for many years and later became a Tobacco Grader for the United States Government. Garnett served his country in the United States Army during World War II and honorably discharged in 1946. He was a lifetime farmer having brought Simmental beef cattle to Columbia, KY. He was a member of Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church and was well-known in the surrounding counties with his exceptional bass voice in the church choir, the Pickett's Chapel Quartet and with the Johnnie Janes community singings. In his earlier years, he was a participant in the many square-dancing events in and around Adair County, an auctioneer with Coy Downey Real Estate & Auctions and very active in the political community, having run for office of County Judge-Executive on one occasion. During his lifetime, Garnett taught himself the Spanish language, calligraphy hand-writing, basket weaving, artistic painting and even grew his own broom corn and then hand made brooms which he would give away to family and friends. He was visited by many neighbors throughout the years for needing his "home remedy cold medicine". Garnett had a love for Chevrolet trucks (only red in color), vegetable and flower gardening, bee hives and was an avid baseball and basketball fan, with his love for both the U of L Cardinals and UK Wildcats. As Garnett left this world, a clear mind full of knowledge and history has also departed with him."

Remembering Garnett Baker: He always had a good time

He never let the writer forget about the milking contest when Gary Lane rival milker was O.A. "Cotton" Durham. Garnett Baker was to supply the "cows." Both opponents in the contest were in for a Garnett Baker surprise

By Gary Lane

I have a lot of great memories of Garnett Baker but the best one will be a milking contest he arranged on the Square during a County dairy day many years ago. I was to milk against former County Attorney, Cotton Durham. Garnett would bring the cows.

To his delight, he led goats upon a trailer in front of a large crowd on the Square. It wasn't the first time I had milked a goat and the Mr. Durham might have had a little help in getting more milk than me, but Garnett had the biggest laugh.

He always asked me about milking goats on the Square in Columbia when I saw him. He always had a good time and I know he will be missed greatly by family and friends in Adair county. Rest in peace Mr. Baker.

-Gary Lane

Mail deliveries have had multiple obstacles this week

First there was the Monday Federal Holiday, doubling Tuesday's delivery. Dispatches from Elizabethtown have arrived late each week. And, despite heroic efforts by road crews, the weather has delivered fierce blows. Patrons can help, this postman's wife says. And many have.

In regards to regular mail service everyone should understand that just like the school busses, the mailman has to be able to get to all the boxes along their route. This snow came at an extra bad time because the post office was closed on Monday and that put them with an extra load of mail already.

A suggestion by a reader to help those needing help in the storm

One resident, who will go unnamed, had been living on crackers and water for three days, hesitant to ask for help. Fortunately, he didn't have to. A Good Samaritan in. All came out well, but it's a example of how sometimes, one's desires not to be a bother causes those alone to ask for help. It has to be offered. Good Samaritans sometimes have to be proactive
Need help: Having trouble finding someone to push your drive? Get you medicine? Get groceries or firewood or kerosene. Maybe we get the word out for you.

Just yesterday, we learned of a situation which could be occurring more than we'd imagine. An Adair Countian of means - but with special dietary needs - was at home and had been living on crackers and water for three days. A relative had a friend check and the friend found that a problem existed.

Birds and cat food: Why birds eat catfood

By Joyce Coomer

Birds frequently fly out of the shed where I feed my cats - summer, winter, rain or shine. I know there are plenty of food sources around our place year round as we don't mow the pasture except once a year - usually in early spring before baby rabbits and birds are born and/or out and about, so the goldenrod, Queen Anne's lace and varied grass seeds are available in the winter.

There are also wild roses and other seed-producing plants on our farm. I think the birds go into the shed after the cat food because it's handy! - Joyce M. Coomer
