Generally mail service has not stopped even though many people have not received mail for the past few days.

The Post Office has been open for business transactions regular hours and mail has been coming in and being dispatched out consistently.

Customers that received their mail at the post office delivered to a P.O. Box address have been getting their mail daily.

All of our employees have reported to work each and every day and carrier's have been making attempts to deliver as much mail as safely possible.

There was no mail service on Monday since this was a Federal Holiday, Washington's Birthday.

There was very limited mail delivery on Tuesday because of the extreme unsafe road conditions.

As the road conditions have improved we have been able to reach more and more customers.

I hope that customers understand that even though a road may be plowed the carrier serving a curbside mailbox needs to be able to safely pull up to and away from the mailbox to provide service.

Also, a customer that receives delivery to their door may clear their steps and porch but cannot be served if the sidewalk or street getting there is not clear.

Carrier's follow specific routes and may not be able to detour around a road that is not passable to get to a road that has been cleared.

The carrier makes the decision whether they can serve a delivery at the time they get there and the conditions the roads are in at the time.

When a carrier cannot deliver the mail, it creates much more work for them to bring the mail back to the office and resort and rehandle for deliver on another day.

I apologize to all our customers that have experienced a suspension of mail service and want to assure them that we will get their mail delivered as soon as safely possible.

We have extra employees brought in today to assist and get as much mail delivered as we can. Thank you. -- Randal Murrell Columbia Postmaster
