JIM: Admonitions & Advices from 110 years ago, Adair Co., KY

PROLOGUE: Having taken up the mantle of poor health and discovering the fit exceeds that of the emperor's new threads, I find myself honor-bound to make the most of the wearing thereof, even at the cost of cutting short today's column. Sic semper hypochondria! - JIM

The mid-November 1904 issue of the Adair County News brimmed over with Good Wholesome Advice.

First up came a stern admonition against talking in church. Sharply advised the paper, "It is not only bad manners, but very annoying to the minister," followed by the coup de grace, "people...will turn their heads to see who your parents are." Keeping with the religious theme, another short article noted the complaints of local ministers about light attendance at their prayer meetings. Opined the News, "The prayer meetings are a very important service" where "more Bible information can be gathered than at the appointments for preaching." The piece closed with the no-nonsense directive, "Make up your mind to attend."

Tom Chaney: Western Trails and Ralph Compton

Of Writers And Their Books: Western Trails and Ralph Compton. Tom says Ralph Compton's novels are not great literature but the action is great and they are cracking good stories. This column first appeared 12 February 2006.

Western Trails and Ralph Compton

I have said before that I like Western novels. The fondness goes back to Friday nights at the Strand Theater and the cap pistols and fake western duds that my friends and I donned in the western plains of Yancy Avenue at Main Street in the early 1940's. In those days the cattle trail led across Main Street, through Mrs. Poynter's yard to the alfalfa field at what is now the end of Woodlawn Avenue. Woodlawn, in those days, ended at a gate just beyond Mr. Poynter's duplex where my western-movie-loving grandmother lived.

Wild western outlaws and sometimes evil Nazi spies lurked by the fence and amidst the alfalfa. But mostly they were outlaws.

Happy Tail: Finders keepers - SFR dogs not available for adoption

There's Girlie Girlie, now Sally, the Australian Cattle Dog/Border Collie Mix; and Gracie, the Maltese Mix who came to Sugarfoot Farm Rescue as a ball of tangle hair who is still wary of strangers; and Tyson, who's the official greeter and has become Keith's Dog. We have several dogs at the farm that are not available for adoption. Most of them have issues that make them unsuitable to go to another home. Some have just been here so long it wouldn't be fair to adopt them out because they would feel they were being abandoned again. Here are stories about a few of our "keepers".

Mechanically challenged Gadberrian: Why all those parts left over?

He sympathizes with the plight of Chuck Hinman. Fortunately, even today in beautiful Downtown Gadberry, two great guys take pity in a pinch

By Charles Marshburn

I can fully sympathize with Chuck Hinman because I was born with the same handicap. Fortunately for me, I had two friends in high school that were born with mechanical blessings and always stepped in and moved me out of the way when I had an urge to attempt something mechanical. They moved me so they didn't have extra work trying to come behind me and fix what I messed up! I have two great guys next door here in beautiful downtown Gadberry that have taken over for my high school friends. I never could figure out why I had so many extra parts left over when I attempted to fix anything.

Carol Perkins: Shopping networks are addictive

For this veteran shopper, watching shopping shows on Tv is is not chosen option. She says, 'I like seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing, or touching a potential purchase so shopping online is my second choice' but she's fascinated by the hosts, and the skills they need. "Working at a home shopping network would require the skill of being able to take a gemstone and make it as appealing as a diamond. To assure a big woman that even she can look wonderul in the newest pair of skinny jeans (won't happen). Most of all, it would require the ability to talk nonstop. As a matter of fact, I often mute the TV because of the constant talk. What can be said about a jar with a candle in it?'

Somewhere at this very minute are women, sitting in recliners or propping up in bed with a stack of bed pillows with phone in hand, watching one of the home shopping networks. These shows are addictive.

Just of late I have been watching both channels looking at the Christmas items and thinking of gifts to give others. The more I watch, the more I want to watch. If I veer too far from the TV, I might miss a daily special.

Chuck Hinman: IJMA. Changing Oil

Changing Oil. Chuck decides at age 42 to change the oil in his car, knowing that his Dad always said he should "stay ten feet away from cars."
Next earlier Chuck Hinman column - Chuck Hinman Veterans Day 2003

Changing Oil

It is a fact of life that some people are blessed with more skills and aptitudes than others. I have observed that some parent do a better job of teaching or training their children household skills. And yes, even horse-sense seems unevenly distributed.

I wasn't blessed with automotive maintenance skills as many are. Maybe that's why the Lord never made it possible for me to own a car until I was twenty-seven years old. There was an element of truth in Dad's admonition that I, Chuck Hinman, should "stay ten feet away from cars." That was funny but I began to know it was true and it hurt.
