Billy Joe Fudge: I now know how Columbus must have felt

By Billy Joe Fudge

I was just satisfying my addiction to maps and made an amazing discovery while perusing Adair County on Google maps. It seems, according to Google Maps, that Portland, Milltown and Columbia are located on and along the banks of Green River.

It seems that Green River begins at the confluence of Russell Creek and Little Clifty Creek, just about a half mile North of the intersection of Freedom Church Road and Ivy Lane.

I now know how Columbus must have felt but my one overarching question is; how could Mike and Jim have missed this tidbit of information while searching the annals of Adair County History? - Billy Joe Fudge

Fog is a factor this morning, and for the school calendar

By Larry Smith, FM 92.7 the WAVE

Fog is a factor this morning. It's thick as a brick on KY 55 especial in the Fog Belt of Cane Valley, Kelleyville and Coburg. Early morning drivers should take care in other areas, as well - there's plenty of fog on KY 80 east of Columbia to the studio.

Thinking ahead, we've already had fog on 10 of the first 12 days of August. I'm going to go ahead and recommend that Superintendent Reed go ahead and amend the school calendar to allow for the snows we'll get this year. May Board Attorney Mike Harris can figure out which ones . . . - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications.

Poetry by Robert Stone: A world without, a self within

A world without, a self within
- a sonnet for the birthday of Rebecca Susan Odell
The child is fascinated with its skin,
suspecting none of mysteries ahead,
and learns a world without, a self within,
ignoring differences, names not said.

The young adult is blinded by desire,
too little or too much accepting change,
and wonders if companion's warming fire
is worth the effort life to rearrange.

The old is settled into habits firm,
aroused by flashes of bright future hope,
subsiding back into the final term
of seeking happiness on downward slope.

And almost lovers, will they soon be back
to sit and touch and talk and keep on track?

- Robert Stone, 11 August 2014
