Visits: When we were all a community

The visits of politicians to my house are welcomed and it’s a good time to connect with whose going to be making decisions on how our taxes are spent and what kind of laws we will be living under. Yes, come talk to me anytime!

By Ralph Waggener
Personal commentary of Editor of It's Just for a Smile News

The days gone by when neighbors visited neighbor has passed. We get few visitors other than family anymore. The late Colby Pickett and his wife Wayne where our next door neighbors when we lived in the Rice Addition.

Colby was the one person who would summons everyone he could see to gather ether on his front porch or even in the streets; when this happened we were all a community.

Remembering Ollie J. Roberts: A member of RSHS class of '41

Five members of Russell Springs High School class of 1941 have passed on in the last year; oddest thing about the class was that there were three sets of twins.

By JDGEE

Ollie J. Roberts is the fifth member of the Russell Springs High School Class of '41 (names of all class members at (Russell Springs class of 1941) to pass within the last year. Of the five surviving members, one lives in Ohio, one in Oklahoma, one in Virginia, one in Louisville, and one in Campbellsville.

My uncle Woody, my father's next to youngest brother, was also in that class but broke family tradition ("a long life is the best revenge") by dying when he was only 89. Another Class of '41 graduate was J.C. Williams, a grandson of Dr. Gose. Oddest fact about the class: there were three sets of twins out of a class of 33 students. Ollie was a strong adherent of the old, old saw about marriage and school not mixing; he remained single. - JDGee

Knifleyan saw future away from the mill; career made him stout

Richard Hovious wrote the following in response to a question, "What Mill? Lancaster Planing Mill?" Turns out it wasn't. He doesn't tell where the mill was, but he does give insight on career titles at the Stanley Carney, Buford Sherill, and the Feese Brothers - where an off-bearing job paid the handsome rate of $1 per hour

By Richard Hovious

One of the reasons I joined the Navy at the ripe old ageof 13 was, that after workin' at the mill for Stanley Carney, Buford Sherrill and the Feese Brothers I had decided maybe that wasn't the career for me. I began at the "bottom of the ladder" ´doodlin dust (Sawdust )60 cents per hour and rose to the top (off-bearing) $1.00 per hour, Shortly after entering the Navy (I had turned 14 by then - so help me, I was asked; HOW LONG I had been lifting weights? Had a treatment from my military chiropractor yesterday and he thought I should challenge Jack Lalanne (?). - Richard Hovious, the Knifleyan abroad, in Spain
