Wildlife of Kentucky: Black coyote - or Yotedog, Adair Co., KY

2014-01-21 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Leanna Franklin.
Josh Franklin
trapped a black coyote this morning, January 21, 2014. Black coyotes are quite rare, he said. He's only been trapping a short while, after receiving instruction from the best trapper in the profession, who now takes pride in his student's acheivement and calls him "Dan'l Boone." He thinks that the black color comes from a cross with a German Shepherd, which creates a "Yotedog." The coyote is his 25th career coyote catch. His skills are now much in demand, from farmers who want to reduce the predator population. He can be be reached at 270-634-1667. In real life he's stays pretty busy in the family business, working with his father in Franklin Oil Well Services. - CM.

Letter: Zoning can add beauty, commercial value to the square

Mary Keltner writes:
Good idea, Maury! But, at the same time, zoning regulations disallowing owners from letting buildings become so run down and staying vacant would go a long way towards improving the Columbia square. We could have a mixed use project of stores, artists studios and apartments, all of which would add beauty and commercial value to the square.--Mary Keltner
