Letter: Appreciate road crews and be patient Sandra Grant writes: I totally disagree. I also live on 900 and no, they are not perfect, side roads usually are not but they do make sure they are drivable. Maybe this person came home before they got a chance to do anything to the road but at 8pm that Thursday when I traveled 900 to get home I got there safely. There are only a handful of men trying to clear all roads, not possible in a short amount of time. I think our road crews are awesome. We should appreciate what they try to do and be patient. Our turn will come. Oh, I don't have 4-wheel drive either. - Sandra GrantComments re article 64434 Jarrett Miller says KY 900 gets little from road crew 2014-01-06 18:55:28 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
Curtis Grant replies to criticism of the State Highway Department All roads in each class get equal attention. KY 900 is important, but it is a "C" road. KY 55 is an "A" road. Highway Department has 350 miles of road to maintain.Click on headline for complete commentary Comments: re article 64434 - Jarrett Miller says KY 900 gets little from road crew Curtis Grant Personal Commentary As an employee of the State Highway Department here in Adair County, I want to inform the ones who speak before thinking. We have well over 350 two-lane miles to cover, and we are required to salt and plow (both ways) larger heavily traveled roads first (parkway, north and south KY 55, south and north KY 61, etc); these are called "A" roads; then less travelled "B" roads, then, lastly "C" roads (KY 900, KY 768, etc.) Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2014-01-06 17:59:44 | Comments | Printable version

Jarrett Miller says KY 900 gets little from road crew Jarrett Miller writes: Whether you love or hate the road crews depends a lot on where you live. Having lived out on HWY 900 for over a year I can tell you that the road crews do little or nothing for us. Just this past Thursday (1/2) my wife, daughter and I were headed home in the early evening. HWY 55 was well treated and cleared, however; when we got to HWY 900, there was no sign of anything being done. There was several inches on snow and slush covering the road. The road was solid white. There weren't even any tire tracks. It had not been plowed or salted. In fact there were people parked at the head of the road waiting and hoping that the road crews would show up so that they could get home. Even with 4 Wheel drive, the drive was extremely dangerous. The road crews only focus on certain roads, and if you aren't on the very short list, they do nothing for you. -Jarrett MillerComments re article 64424 Road crews appreciated by Miz Victoria Girls 2014-01-06 13:43:53 | Comments | Printable version

Larry Smith: Getting in your vehicle the big factor today By Larry Smith, FM 92.7, the WAVE Roads are passable today, but there are dangerous patches of ice, so plan on twice the time for your commute. The biggest factor for many will be getting into your vehicle. I had to fight a frozen door and frozen windshield just to get underway to make the commute from Campbellsville to Columbia. And the wind chill is unbelievably bitter. So remember that frostbite can happen in just a few minutes. Dress warmly, use caution. JIM: Russell County in 1900, as seen in Adair County News In a nod to the Russell Springs Fair (August 14th-17th), the mid-August 1900 edition of the Adair County News devoted nearly one-half of page three -- the main news page at the time -- to community newsletters from Russell County. A brief side article stated that "We made an effort to have all the post-offices in Russell County represented in the News this week. A few failed to respond, but we are thankful for the reports sent in." By Jim Sixteen correspondents responded, several of them from communities now long-since fully submerged by the waters of Lake Cumberland. A few of the correspondents gave thumbnail sketches of their community or some of the characters therein. Jamestown reported a light rain had fallen recently; Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Murrell and daughter Katie of Columbia had visited the G.F. Jones family (the families were related through Mrs. Murrell); the school was progressing nicely with a large bump in attendance anticipated with the advent of cooler temperatures; and the aforementioned Mr. Jones was doing a good business in the drugstore he recently had established in Jamestown.
