A letter raises questions about immigration to Adair County

How many countries are represented by new incomers in the past two decades?

Charles Miller, Gradyville, KY, submitted his wife's birthday recently, with a note that she hails from Ukraine, the beautiful, cultured, and highly educated European country - the second largest after Russia.

His letter raised a question: Does anyone know how many countries are represented by new Adair Countians - here in the past two decades?

Back in the days of the Great & Observant Circuit Court Clerk Bill Ballou, he noted the influx of immigrants from other states. That was just after the days when people from off were identified as, "You know, that family from New Mexico," and everyone knew who they were talking about. Mr. Ballou knew the demographics by issuing drivers licenses to the newcomers.

Is there any similar source for countries of origin? If you know an easy source, please let us know.

There may be some surprises. I just learned two years ago of a descendant of Vikings among us - 42 years after I married her, but it didn't matter, what with the dimples and dancing eyes and all. - ED WAGGENER
