Gary Rose: Recumbent, tadpole design, trikes have advantages

Recumbent cycles started in the Little Cake area of Adair County with the advent of Gerald Holt's Catrike 700 Recumbent trike; then two others purchased similar, tadpole designed people powered vehicles. Now, with Gary and Diane Rose's two ICE Adventure line trikes, recumbents have become almost commonplace in Adair County. Gary and Diane were making swift passage on Sano Road on the ICE machines the accompanying photo(s) were taken and he was warned that Adair Countians might not take kindly to people pedalling their sofas down the highway - but really they do. The low-riding trikes with their colorful pennants make the countryside just that much brighter. He sent the following article. - EW

By Gary Rose
Founder of BicyclingAdair.org

Riding your sofa down the road may not be legal but riding your recliner is. LOL :-)

The recumbent trike I was riding today is from the ICE Adventure line. It is a tadpole design, 2 wheels up front 1 in the rear. There also is a delta design with 1 wheel in the front and 2 in the rear.

Ann Burton Murphy: Agrees with Mary Keltner 100%

The need is great. People will be hurt by Food Stamp cuts. Praise Assembly Food Pantry had 107 families come by for help last week. Unfortunately, some had to be turned away because of lack of stock. Meat is especially needed, writer says.

By Ann Burton Murphy

Commentary

I agree with Mary Keltner 100%.

My Church, Praise Assembly of God, has a food pantry, in which I help, at Praise Assembly Hope Center Food Pantry, 310 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY.

Last week, we had 107 families come to us for food. With SNAP benefits being cut, the first of November, we will be seeing many more new ones come in.

Mary Keltner: Why the Food Stamp cutback is a catastrophe

Comments about: Jon Halsey: Why is food stamp cutback a catastrophe?

By Mary Keltner

I can think of two reasons right away - food prices have risen, and the amount given pre-2009 stimulus was inadequate to begin with.

I have a suggestion for those of us fortunate enough not to need help this holiday season. Instead of buying unneeded "stuff" for family and friends, make a donation to our local Food Pantry and/or The Salvation Army. This has been a tradition in my family for many years, since my children were small. The giving was discussed as a family, and the children participated in the decision of where the money should go. My children now do the same with their young families, so I can see that the value of giving was passed on. - Mary Keltner

The Adair County Garden Club needs your bagged leaves!

By Wendy Butler Burt

The best thing you can do with your leaves is use them in your own garden - in compost, as mulch, etc. But the next best thing you can do is to call the Adair County Garden Club to come pick up your bagged leaves (no black walnut leaves, please!). You'd be amazed at all the ways the ACGC will use them. So get some exercise this weekend by raking and bagging your leaves. Members of the Garden Club will come to pick up the bags. Call Wendy Butler Burt at 270-634-0504.

This is simply a return to the level prior to the temporary "stimulus." So there has been a bonus period that is now ending. Why is this such a potential catastrophe?

KY Afield Outdoors: Largemouth bass active in smaller lakes

One nearby lake where largemouth are huge is Cedar Fork Lake is 63.4 miles, 1 hour and 44 minutes from the intersection of Campbellsville Street and Fairgound Street (aka Fairgrounds Street/"206"), Columbia, KY, according to Google Map. This is the seventh installment of a series of articles titled "Fall Fishing Festival" profiling the productive fishing on Kentucky's lakes, rivers and streams in fall.

Kentucky Afield Magazine, KDFWR

FRANKFORT, KY - Many anglers think the first cool winds of early fall spur largemouth bass to move from their deep summer haunts and shove their noses practically on the bank.

They fish too shallow too early and wind up frustrated. Those bright, glistening days of early fall that send people to the lake by the droves are actually some of the toughest days of the year to catch largemouth bass.
