Epicurean Kentuckian: History-making Fig Joppas

2013-09-01 - Beautiful Joppa - Photo by Maury Lewis.
Fig Joppas - "Here is my first try at making a Fig Joppa. They are not real pretty but they are very tasty. I will try some more recipes to see if beautiful Joppa can become the fig bar capital of Kentucky. If anyone has a recipe for me to try I am willing to try it. melewi." And so we all are witnesses to the unfolding of an epic. This is a photo of the first batch of Fig Rolls ever reported to CM which were made from Figs grown in Adair County - these by Danny & Debbie Burris - and baked in Beautiful Joppa, Adair County, KY. Fig Newtons, as it turns out, are trademarked by Nabisco so we can't call them that. And Fig Newtons are not even named for the real Newton, Mike, but for some town in Massachusetts. Actually, these Fig delicacies despite Maury's modest denial, are even prettier, and look to be more tasty, than the factory ones.

Letter: Remembers Good Times

Mary Ann Brown writes:
Carol this story brought back a lot of memories as a child. Times were so much better and easy on the soul. You could trust most of your neighbors and then you actually knew who your neighbors were. Keys were left in the car or truck because nobody stole them. Carol, I think air conditioning has made us soft and tender, if the temperature gets in the mid 90s we are about to panic and want the warm air to subside. But I guess a lot has to do with aging too. Thank you for bringing back a memory of a good time. --Mary Ann Brown

Happy Tail: Yard Sale Treasures

While out searching for yard sale treasures - supplies to make life better for the residents of Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, Peg's own dogs make friends along the way. Sometimes, along her route, she sees dogs in scorching heat without adequate water or cooling shade, and feels a need to change from Peg, the Yard Sale shopper to Peg, Animal protector - and debates whether to call the sheriff or not. Fridays are my day. I get up early in the morning and take care of the dogs. When I'm done I jump in the truck with Thumbelina and Kelsey, my two special dogs, and off we go to yard sales. I print out the yard sales listed on Columbia Magazine and highlight the sales that are on Friday. Certain neighborhoods always have high quality items and other neighborhoods have great deals. I put stars by the yard sales that I don't want to miss.

Carol Perkins: Remember a time when no doors were locked

There was a time when no one knocked on doors. No doors were locked. A visitor usually gave out a shout, "Anybody home?" before opening the screen door. Most earlier homes had screen doors simply because there was no air conditioning. Looking back now, I wonder how we survived without air or felt safe enough to go to sleep with unlocked doors. -CAROL PERKINS

Does the Cut Worm Forgive the Plow?

White is not Black. Black is not White. All color? No color? We can neither know ourselves nor those most like us. How then can we be sure of our knowledge of another's racial heritage?

Fiction at its best provides a tentative beginning to that knowledge. The images are not always clear. They flicker on the wall of a cave like shadows produced by a searing flame apt to blind if seen boldly.
