He was a native of Metcalfe County, KY. He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Fry Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mozella M. kelly Poynter. He was a retired farmer, and a WWII Veteran having served in the United States Army

CU students attend the 2013 Presidential inauguration

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - January 2013 will mark a month that many Campbellsville University students will remember for a long time. Campbellsville University made it possible for three groups of students to attend President Barack Obamas second inauguration ceremony.

Students attending were from three university clubs: Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, the Sociology Club and the Political Science Club.

The Columbia Fire Dept responded to a house fire Friday morning, February 1, 2013, at 11:15amCT at 706 Mitchell Street, Columbia, KY, for a residential house fire. The home was owned by Mendell and Teresa Milby, it was occupied by Jeff Coffey. There were 17 firemen on the scene for around one hour and the home suffered major damage. - Donald Hare

Drake, who has been Lindsey Wilson's chief financial officer since 2004, will become the 26th president in Central Methodist's 159-year history.

Barney Janes was elected President of Cattlemen's Association at its meeting January 28, 2013. Janes will succeed Barry Smith in the post.

Other Officers elected at the 2013 Cattlemen's Association Annual Meeting were as follows: President- Barney Janes; Vice-President- Jason Grider; Secretary - Danny Propes; and Treasurer- Teresa Bright. Directors are: Danny Burris, Troy Grider, John Ballou, Larry Burton, and John Pike.

Grider Farms received the Cattlemen of the Year Award. Accepting the award for Grider Farms were Jason Grider and Ronnie Grider.

Day & Day Feed and Pet was presented the Appreciation Award. Accepting the award were Julie and Gary Day.

Rev. Patton recalls visiting soldier's parents after death of son

Another chapter in the life of an Adair County hero, PFC Harold Leonard Burton, who was killed in action in World War II. Rev. Willie Patton was pastor of Purdy Separate Church. He baptized Harold Leonard Burton, officiated at his funeral. Rev. Paul Patton remembers visiting Alec and Rosie Burton to comfort them, with his father after PFC Burton was killed in action. 'What a sad time it was,' he recalls.

Seeing the picture of Harold L. Burton's gravemarker in the Columbia Magazine caused me to go to my Mother's picture collection where she had a picture of PFC Harold Burton as well as a picture of his parents, Alec and Rosie Burton holding a picture of their son.

My father, Rev. Willie Patton was the pastor of the Burton family at Purdy Separate Baptist Church for a period of 18 years and had baptized Harold when he was 12 years of age. Dad also officiated at Harold's funeral on January 2, l949 at the Purdy church.

COLUMBIA, Ky. - Kalen Kimberland, a game removed from scoring a career high, did it again on Thursday, January 31, 2013, scoring a game-best 21 points to lead No. 4 Lindsey Wilson past Rio Grande (Rio Grande, Ohio) 68-51 at Biggers Sports Center.

Daronte' Clark added 14 points with three 3-pointers and Chris Bridges scored 11, while DeAntra Scott also notched double figures with 10. Milton Watts had a block party down low, swatting five shots to go along with nine points and four rebounds.

Wes Hanspard led the Blue Raiders (20-2, 10-2 MSC) with seven boards, but it was Rio Grande leading the battle on the glass for the game 44-33 behind eight rebounds from Dominick Haynes.

D.D. Joiner was the lone member of the RedStorm (7-15, 3-10 MSC) to reach double figures scoring with 12 points while also grabbing six boards.

Kimberland's career-high also moved him up a spot to fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,276 points.

Lindsey Women's Soccer hangs 3rd Big Red banner

Members of the Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team unveiled the program's third NAIA national championship banner Thursday night at Biggers Sports Center. The banner - known in the NAIA as "Big Red" - was unveiled during halftime of the LWC-Rio Grande (Rio Grande, Ohio) University men's basketball game and placed on the Biggers Center wall next to the program's first two national titles, won in 2004 and 2006, respectively. The LWC women's soccer team won the 2012 NAIA national title December 1, 2012.

COLUMBIA, KY - It was a big night for Ashley Rainey on Thursday, January 31, 2013, as she racked up 35 points and 15 rebounds to, at times, single handedly keep Lindsey Wilson on top of Rio Grande (Rio Grande, Ohio) for an 80-68 win at Biggers Sports Center.

Jasmine Brimm joined her in double figures with 25 points, while Rainey also led the game in rebounds with 15. Brimm ended up with the game high in assists with seven.

Shardai Morrison-Fountain was the best scorer for the RedStorm (6-16, 0-13 MSC) with 24 points and Sarah Bonar backed her up with 18.

Lindsey Wilson (15-7, 6-6 MSC) trailed for the first 11 minutes of the game, but found a lead with 6:55 left in the first half and never relinquished it. - Dan White

KSP arrests Leitchfield man on 20 counts of child porn

LEITCHFIELD, KY - On Wednesday, January 30, 2013, KSP Units from Post 4 arrested 48-year-old Michael E. Alcorn for 20 counts of Distribution of Matter Portraying Sexual Performance of a Minor-1st Offense at his residence on Orchard Street in Leitchfield. The charges stemmed from a tip from the Knox County (Tennessee) Sheriff's Department. Investigators were able to identify Alcorn as the suspect. A search warrant was executed which revealed illicit images of children. Alcorn was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center, Leitchfield, KY. Trooper First Class Terry Whittaker is conducting the ongoing investigation. - MTPR NORMAN CHAFFINS
