Glad we can recycle batteries at the Adair Recycling Center By Vonnie Kolbenschlag I am pleased we have a recycling center. We recycle all items listed. I was happy to find out that I can also recycle batteries at the recycling facility off Campbellsville Street at 167 Service Road. The recycling center takes all size batteries and does not toss them in the dumpster. I was told "someone comes to pick them up for safe disposal." Remembers when the Fortune Street dispensary was a Cab HQ Comments re photo 45484 Tiny Building on Fortune Street was once a dispensary Rick Caldwell writes: At one tine in the late 60's and early 70's my great uncle had the headquarters for Baker cab there. He was the brother of my grandpaw RT Baker. - Rick CaldwellThanks, Rick Caldwell: Was his name Vernon Baker? I remember him. A fine man. It would be great to have some of the photos of the old cab companies. I believe Walker Cab was once the biggest. Vanus Coomer had another fine fleet. But the most colorful taxi owner was an unofficial one: "Jimtown" Coomer. I know I'm leaving out some - and should remember them all. When we used to wait for the Louisville Times afternoon papers at the bus station, the cab drivers were always there, waiting for fares, waiting to taking people the last mile of the way. Thanks for resurrecting some memories. - EW 2012-06-05 19:51:21 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History

Was Greensburg's Tom Tabor same as Columbia's Tom Tabor? Joe DeSpain writes: Ed, Thanks for the photo of the Columbia Dispensary on Fortune St. I also noticed mention of Tom Tabor's place on Hudson Street. In April, 1937 Thomas A. Tabor opened Tabor's Cabin on the Campbellsville road near Greensburg where he sold whiskey, wine, gin, and beer. It couldn't have lasted long as the city voted to go dry in 1937, a vote certified by the Ky Court of Appeals in 1938 thus ending alcohol sales June, 1938. I wonder if this is the same Tom Tabor? - Joe DeSpainI'm going to think, most likely. Tom Tabor was a bigger than life entrepreneur.
