Does anyone have a photo of Jamestown Hilltop before top removed?

Comments re photo 44050 Coming soon a view weve never seen before

Ann Heskamp Curtis writes:
Hi Ed, I wonder if anyone has an old photo of this corner before the current commercial development was there. The view when it was a hillside, with home and trees? My mind's eye has failed me and I can't recall what it looked like, although I'm sure I saw it almost every day of my childhood!

One more thing: I was just thinking about the bluff that's no longer there at what was once the pinnacle of Jamestown Hill. One thing is for certain...we may be able to reforest woods, and re-stock streams, but we can't put back a mountaintop once it's gone. Or in this case, a hilltop. Thanks, ~Ann
Thanks, Ann Heskamp Curtis. I've always hoped for the same photo. From what people have told me, the first cut into the hill was for KY 80, when it was built, in the 1930s, I believe. I can remember when the CVS site had one tiny little Standard Oil gas station, and I watched the progressive excavation as the hilltop was removed. I can vividly recall the Wilkerson (or was it Wilkinson) later Clyde Young Home. Surely someone has a picture of it. Hope so, anyway. And, of course, thanks for the reminder of the tradeoffs for "progress." -EW

The Gradyville Flood: Little girl swept away on rooftop float

Comments re article 50017 CM Archives on the Gradyville FloodKathy Phelps Gaskin writes:
My Grandmothers Grandmother was lost during The Gradyville Flood. My grandmother was Carrie Keltner Finn, sister to Marvin Keltner, and others. The last time she was seen was on a roof of her house as she floated down high waters! My Grandmother, along with several of her younger siblings, witnessed this. My Grandmother then did not go to school but stayed at home with the younger ones! Please keep me informed for updates. Very interested in keeping with history of it all! Sincerely, - Kathy Phelps Gaskin
Thanks, Kathy Phelps Gaskin: As much as is contained in our CM archives in our predecessor print publication, Columbia! magazine of almost two decades ago, we're still amazed at all the new material, such as this story, about the event 105 years ago June 7, 2012. -EW
