Columbia Walmart back to normal - less than day after storm hit

Twenty-four hours after the hit the store was filled with customers and no one would ever know anything out of the ordinary had happened unless they looked up where light would normally be streaming through and see remnants of broken skylights covered over. - LW

By Linda Waggener

One Associate who was at work during Friday evening's severe storm shared what it had been like when the Columbia Walmart was hit.

KY 768/Sparksville RD Daffodils show on old Rufus Bragg place

MP 19 on KY 768 is heart of Harvey's Ridge, home to Abner Harvey, the Bragg clan, and a major element of the big Stotts families.

By Billy Joe Fudge

This is known to my parents generation as the "Rudolph Bragg" place. The home burned when I was but a child. I think Rudolph's son still owns this farm which is one of the most beautiful, rolling, limestone outcrop farms that I've seen.

This is really the heart of Harvey's Ridge. Right behind the photographer is the "Abner Harvey" farm and my mom grew up about 150 yards from this spot. Her dad, my grandpa was Wilbert Stotts, the oldest of 17 children who passed away in 1959, I believe. Her mother, my grandma was Mary Elizibeth Furkin Stotts who was one of 7 children. And yes, with around 20 great uncles and great aunts I am kin to about every person in the Great Wooded South and many well beyond. - Billy Joe Fudge

Mother wrote to her about the Houchens' fire

Peggy Fudge recalls other epic fires 'burned' into her memory

By Peggy Fudge

I was away at college when Houchens' burned and I learned about it in a letter from my mother. Of course, this was huge news and I hated that I missed the excitement. From our house it must have looked like the town was burning. Wasn't there a picture in the paper of volunteer firefighter Larry Walker on top of the burning building?

Or is that my vivid imagination filling in the gaps of the story? Anyway, Mom, always a loyal Houchens' customer, did her weekly shopping at the Houchens' in Russell Springs. I believe several of the Columbia store employees worked there until the local store reopened.

A little aside-some local fires 'burned' into my brain include City Supply, Miller Hotel, and the Doc Edwards house on the corner of Grissom and Tutt. - Peggy Fudge

Says local agents demonstrate why it is best to buy right here

It is nice to know that local people are taking care of local people. -VICKY PIKE

By Victoria Pike

I was especially proud of our local insurance agents who stayed up last night and were open today for those of us who had damage to file a claim. It certainly was nice to not have to worry about what to do all weekend.

We received a call this afternoon from our insurance, Kentucky Farm Bureau, to make sure we had a place to stay if we needed it for the night. Our windows were not broken out but some of our neighbors like the Stotts weren't as lucky.

It is nice to know that local people are taking care of local people. All I had to do was run in the office this morning and tell them we had damage. This is a great example of when buying local is so important.

Again, I would like to thank all those local agents who stayed up last night and were up early this morning helping their customers with claims.Vicky --Victoria Pike

Frightened Fauna in wake of Hail which hit The Holler

Shamarie comeback as photographer has rocky launch. Even fearless photographer ran for cover when hail pounded down on her refuge like World war had broken out again; the cover of hail was as pretty as a winter snow, but there was trauma, the trees and plants won't even remember the beating they got, but the writer and the coon dog may be changed forever

Maury: It's not about smokers - a Great Ad

Maury E Lewis writes:
This is a great Ad because when we say something about wanting smoke free restaurants to eat in or smoke free businesses to do business in, it is Not about the smokers, it is about breathing second hand smoke. A lot of us were smokers at one time and we chose to stop smoking for health reasons; ours and other's.I do not under stand why some businesses put their smoking area at the front door so you have to walk by it or through it to get in the front door. - Maury E Lewis
Thanks, again, for wonderful insight A thought I have sometimes is why the Golden Rule couldn't just be observed. I'd interpret that to mean that smokers would always go outside, if they have to smoke at all. -EW

Michelle Young had perfect vantage point to watch storms

Hailstorm of March 2, 2012: Observers saw what looked like 'a Wall of Rain' as devastating hailstorm raced eastward along the Louie B. Nunn/Cumberland Parkway from Metcalfe, through Adair County, and on into Russell

Michelle Young of the Milltown community in Adair County watched the storms move from high on Milltown Hill on KY 61 north of Columbia last night.

She had gone to be close enough to the storm shelter at Jackie Chapmans' but couldn't resist watching the hailstorm move along the Louie B. Nunn/Cumberland Parkway to her south and the storms over Green County.

Storm damage at Walmart: Pharmacy services available

Richard Raines writes at 9:06pmCT, Friday, March 2, 2012:
Just a note to let you know that while the Columbia Wal-mart is closed for emergency repairs to the building caused by the storm, the pharmacy did not receive any visible pharmacy damage, and pharmacy customers may come to the general merchandise door and come to the pharmacy Saturday normal hours (9am to 7pm). They just won't be able to go thru the other parts of the store shopping, just to the pharmacy counter only until the store re-opens. Thanks. --Richard Raines
Thanks: Richard Raines, as always for your dispatches: The Columbia Walmart store is now such a critical supplier of goods and services for a wide area that we appreciate updates on the progress in reopening. The situation is somewhat akin to the Houchens' fire in the 1970s, when a food store which supplied over half the supermarket food for Adair County was suddenly no longer available and there was suddenly logistical nightmares for thousands of families. The rebuilt Houchens store is now the building housing Sav-A-Lot on E. Guardian in Columbia, Perhaps other readers have more vivid recollections of how we coped with that. - EW

Kentucky Color - Hail

The Damage from the Hail Storm of March 2, 2012 will still be under assessment for some days yet. Many have taken a few moments to also assess the attendant natural beauty of the phenomenon, which few of us have experienced in a life time. Billy Joe Fudge has taken the process many steps beyond, with his unique eye for spotting both the Small and the Significant Differences, as in this essay on shapes of haiil and memories of flight in a storm - when his pilot aimed the plane straight at earth - with a surprising result!
Click on headline for essay with hailstone album, with photo(s) by the writer and by others who sent photos documenting the relative size of the hailstones

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District ForesterKentucky Division of Forestry

What strikes me, no pun intended, about this double handful of hailstones is the many different forms. Some look like ice and some look like little tightly compressed snowballs. Some are round and some are not so round. Some look like solid ice balls and some look like a conglomeration of smaller ice balls.
