Mother wrote to her about the Houchens' fire

Peggy Fudge recalls other epic fires 'burned' into her memory

By Peggy Fudge

I was away at college when Houchens' burned and I learned about it in a letter from my mother. Of course, this was huge news and I hated that I missed the excitement. From our house it must have looked like the town was burning. Wasn't there a picture in the paper of volunteer firefighter Larry Walker on top of the burning building?

Or is that my vivid imagination filling in the gaps of the story? Anyway, Mom, always a loyal Houchens' customer, did her weekly shopping at the Houchens' in Russell Springs. I believe several of the Columbia store employees worked there until the local store reopened.

A little aside-some local fires 'burned' into my brain include City Supply, Miller Hotel, and the Doc Edwards house on the corner of Grissom and Tutt. - Peggy Fudge
