JIM sends AAA Public Service ad for new comers

For incomers and the more mehaineous native born but dumber'n a hammer who may not what has to be known about Tennessee Ridge. -CM

By "Jim"

The following is presented herewith as a public service by the Adair Assimilation Academy for the educfication of Adair Countians who weren't always "of here." It first appeared in the October 2, 1901 Adair County News

Tennessee Ridge

Some one may be interested in this part of the world--some of its people or its locality.Tennessee Ridge is so called from the fact, that most of its people or sojourners are originally from Tennessee, and you bet they are a good ways from there now.Part of the ridge is in the county of Casey and the other part in Adair, the Adair part being Republicans, mostly; but that doesn't mean the Ridge will always be Republican.Crops on the ridge are about an average, excepting Irish potatoes. They are no good. The people are industrious, law abiding citizens and principally good farmers, among whom I mention Thomas Sanders, Walker Absher, Thomas Mills, Wm. Odelburry Cooper, and others.

This wisdom offered to Headmaster Dr. Johnny Vaughan of the Adair Assimilation Academy following its narrow escape from the charnel house of history by Indiana Kentucky "Jim."

Richard Hovious reports in from Spain

Note is a reminder to update Veterans List

Richard Arlan Hovious writes:
Hi, Ed! We're still hangin in there - just survived a four day visit from the pope and one and a half million "youngsters." The Vatican Embassy is ONE block away from my place. I served in the Korean war - a little young for that -waaay too young for WWII. - Richard Arlan Hovious
Thanks. Richard Hovious! Pen will check your entry in the CM Honorable listing of Adair Countians who have served in the Armed Services. And it's a reminder to Adair County Families to check the list and update it. We'd like it to be as up-to-date as possible by September 15, 2011, when President Obama presents the Congressional Medal of Honor to Adair Countian Dakota Meyer.

Charles Marshburn: Prohibition failed

Charles Marshburn writes:
Prohibition supposedly ended in 1933. It was a failed experiment. Bootleggers were put out of business? Not in dry counties that failed to see the light! They are still in business and folks are driving 25 miles or more to purchase alcohol, drink it on the way back and have accidents that would not have occurred if the alcohol was available locally that they are going to drink anyway. Common sense will eventually prevail. I have faith. - Charles Marshburn

More on the Lonzo B. Barrett gravesite

Not either of the two mentioned in earlier articles, Carol Goodin Parker notes

Carol Goodin Parker writes:
Ed, The Whites Cemetery where my grandfather, Lonzo B. Barrett, is buried is neither of the ones you mentioned. There is no longer a road that goes back to it. It is actually on someone's farm. The last time I was there, the road was hardly a road at all. My brother might know who owns the farm now. - Carol Goodin Parker

Architectural comment on building at 100 Public Square, the Photo-Video, Wilson's Rexall, Young's Rexall, Motor & Electric, Cardinal Inn, White Castle Inn, Royal Inn Building at the Greensburg ST, entrance to the Public Square

Ann Curtis writes:
I think the architectural style of the Cardinal Inn resembles the Streamline Moderne style (late Art Deco period.) The Young Rexall building still retains the rounded cornered, stuccoed exterior consistent with that style, even though the top "layers" are no longer there.See Wikipedia entry: Streamline Moderne. -Ann Curtis

Dr. Smith recalls when Columbia had White Castle wannabe

Comments re article 46490 Another progressive speaks up for White CastleRoger D Smith DMD writes:
Ed, Just a comment on the lack of "Sliders" in good old Columbia. I remember going to a trailer type diner in the present area of Pizza Hut in the late 60's. It was at a time when I was out exploring the world and I was only there a couple of times, but I think the name was Scotties. I do remember that we had tiny, square burgers late at night made in the style of White Castle and Krystal.

Your comments would be valuable. - Roger D Smith DMD
Thanks, Dr. Smith. Seems you're right, as usual. It was a memorable place, in many ways. The trailerhouse burger empire was the brainchild of a Wayne County doctor. Anyway, for a brief time, Monticello was challenging Louisville for the food franchising capital of the world at least in the trailerhouse burger joints category. And Columbia had it's own, In Walking Distance of Lindsey Wilson College. Maybe a reader will send more. Maybe a photo. -EW
