State closing unneeded Frankfort, KY prison

Few remaining low custody inmates will be transferred to other facilities, including county jails. Frankfort facility will be transformed to new Kentucky State Police Academy
"Thanks to strategic efforts and initiatives over the past 3 1/2 years, we've reversed Kentucky's inmate population trend, going from first in the nation in the rate of our felon population growth, to a sustained drop in population of more than 1,600 inmates," Gov. Beshear said. "Added to that, the recent passage of HB 463 promises a continued downward impact on the inmate population. The success of these initiatives provides, for the first time, the opportunity to close a minimum security facility, and taking a 24-7 penal facility off line." -GOV. STEVE BESHEAR

News from Justice & Public Safety Cabinet

FRANKFORT, KY (2011-05-09) - Governor Steve Beshear today announced that a now unneeded state prison facility in Franklin County will close by the end of the current fiscal year. The complex will be converted into a needed modern training facility for the Kentucky State Police (KSP).

The Department of Corrections will immediately begin the process of moving inmates from the 205-bed Frankfort Career Development Center, a minimum security state-run prison, to county jails, halfway houses and community supervision, Gov. Beshear said. All inmates will be relocated by June 30, 2011.

Seventy-eight years ago this evening--Tuesday, May 9th, 1933--a tornado roared out of Overton County, Tennessee into Kentucky and ripped a path of death and destruction through Monroe, Metcalfe, Adair, and Russell Counties. The same edition of the Courier reported 14 to 16 killed in Russell County, with many, many injuries there.

The following week, the May 17th edition of the

LWC Seminar to focus on pay and benefits for new businesses

By Duane Bonifer

COLUMBIA, KY - Entrepreneurs need to make sure that they align their employee pay and benefits with the business plan. Techniques for this will be the focus of a free seminar on compensation and benefits as part of the Lindsey Wilson College series of seminars on Build Your Own Job at 11amCT on Wednesday, May 11, in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columbia, KY.

At the seminar, would-be business owners will learn that if they pay too much for salaries and benefits, they can run out of money. But pay too little and risk not getting the level of talent needed to beat the competition.

Presenters at the seminar - students in a class on pay and benefits in the LWC business program - will show ways to find the middle ground on salary decisions.

For pre-registration and more information contact Linda Grider at griderl@lindsey.edu or (270) 384-7385.

And that was a long time ago.

I remember Grimsley Jewelry Store and Miss Susan Miller who ran the Selective Service (draft) office and the Rowe family who owned it.

Adair Co. PRIDE Spring Clean-up Story with Lists of Volunteer Groups, Roads Assigned

The 2011 Adair Co. Spring PRIDE Cleanup, despite having to be postponed, and then facing heavy competition from other May 7, 2011 events including the Kentucky Derby, proved to be a resounding success, anyway.

Judge Ann Melton thought that the 428 volunteers presigned this year might been a record.

The event was marred, somewhat, by the high number of meth lab generators discovered. By 9:20amCT, three had already been located: On Bull Run RD, on Greenhills RD, and on Pelham Branch RD.

The dope war: another salvo

"Jim" writes
While plundering about in the Adair County News tonight, I came across this reference to yet another semi-local bottled drink in this ad in the April 7, 1909 edition:
Drink Dope Cola and Grape, "Originators not imitators." Try a bottle and be convinced. Bottled by Ottley & Hobson, Campbellsville, Ky.
Mr. William Tanner (W.T.) Ottley, mentioned in an earlier CM entry, seemed to go into a downward spiral--from cola bottler to lawyer to (failed) politician to newspaper editor. "Short are the days and filled of woe..." - "Jim"
