I also grew up in Columbia. My aunt, Mrs. Lula Sapp, worked at Russell Department store for many years. She was also a teacher. Her son, Jimmy, was manager of Lerman's Department store. My mom would take my two sisters and me to Columbia on Saturday to shop. We would eat lunch at Coomer's Restaurant, a very small place with great food. Then the girls took in the Saturday matinee while she shopped. But as a teenager, Saturday nights were the best winding up at the Jim Dandy Drive-In with all our friends. Yes, Columbia was a great place in which to grow up. Only one problem: Everybody knew everybody, so you had to watch your p''s and q's. -Margaret Acree This story was posted on 2011-05-09 22:42:59
