The homeowner was burning the remainder of an earlier fire at the location, 39 Dusk Lane, on January 13, 2011. The earlier fire was alleged to have been arson. The Dravo Census: The County, 7. Rest of universe, 1

Also addressed in this Dr. Neat Society white paper: Why are there so many Roscoe Conklin Tarters? Accompanied by a gratuitous anecdote re Judge R.C. Tarter's campaigning style.
With the usual warning to those with little bitty brains: Don't read this if you are mentally challenged. Neither CM nor Jim can be responsible if it splits your head open like a ripe watermelon.

Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story

"Jim" has finally run down one of the two greatest questions facing mankind: Are there Dravos outside of Russell County?

The answer is an emphatic, "No!." Ask in the singular, and there is one, in Maryland, whose percentage Russell Countyese has not been determined by Henry Louis Gates, Jr, though at CM, not being the stickler Mr. "Jim" is, we'd assume the noble blood of The County, maybe even of the Sacred Triangle, courses tother Dravo's veins, too.

Birding 101 is an introduction to the hobby of bird watching as well as an overview of the Great Backyard Bird Count coming February 18, 19, 20, and 21, 2011. This year's class is better than ever, the handouts alone are worth coming for.

Carol Perkins: Things that are bound to happen

Carol Perkins explores the certainties in life, which go far beyond the time honored death and taxes short list
The next earlier Carol Perkins column is Carol Perkins: A Cluttered Mind
By Carol Perkins

There are some things we can count on happening to us. For me, there are many! Here are a few I bet we all have in common.

When you take a child to a restaurant that supplies him with coloring sheets and crayons, you can count on having to retrieve at least two of those crayons from under the table. One by one, they roll off the sides, and you will slide from your seat in the booth (if you're in one) and feel around on the dirty floor in the dark for those missing crayons. Sometimes you kick them from under the table so you can reach them. You can also count on picking them up more than once.

Columbia, KY - A group of Lindsey Wilson College students made history on Saturday afternoon as they participated in the first white coat ceremony in college history.

The 22 students who comprise the college's first nursing class will not receive their bachelor of science degree in nursing until May 2013. Saturday afternoon's ceremony, however, was a significant step in their educational journey because it symbolized that they are nearing the midway point of their undergraduate nursing education.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Cumberland, Sweet William, and more

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. Previously posted on ColumbiaMagazine.com on April 29, 2007

By Rev. Joey N. Welsh

How will your name be remembered

How often do people in our age take the long view of life decisions and their consequences? How often do we look beyond our current needs, or even our current desires and cravings? I fear the answer is that many people give little heed to what the immediate costs of their decisions might be, let alone how the consequences can continue to echo even beyond the bounds of their mortal lives.Every time I read a tragic story of personal or family destruction related to addiction to methamphetamines or Oxycontin, I wonder how the folks involved could ever have imagined that chapter in their lives ending happily. And when I read about people blown to bits in meth lab explosions, I wonder if they ever thought about the name they would leave behind for any kids lucky enough to survive the trauma.

Poetry by Robert H. Stone: Soon day soon done, a sonnet

Soon day soon done
- a sonnet for Christopher Wendell Comperry
Once young I seldom thought of future times
when helps and hurts would narrow down my run,
when joys and sadness still would sound their chimes
and my response would be soon day soon done.

In middle life I busy focused close
when do as soon as possible applied,
when small rewards arrived with hopeful dose
and my desire would ride the fulsome tide.

These later years old masks I bring to mind
when long forgotten chances prick the veil,
when seeming fadeless still-might-be's rewind
and my reply would be repeated tale.

Take pleasure from all nows, soon dimming froms,
and do not wait until the darkness comes.

- Robert Stone, 30 January 2011

This is a simple story about a collie dog, who lived with the Arley Hinman family of rural Liberty, Nebraska. His name was "Sport." He wasn't unusual. What I write about him could have been written about "Doc," the Dillow's Airedale dog, or any of the scores of Gage County, Nebraska farm dogs.

The best guess on when it was built was in 1825.

My G-Grandfather Thomas Browning and his family were living in it when the census of 1850 was taken. It remained in the family until 1908.

Bobby D. Morrison family once owned Diddle Homestead farm

Bobby D Morrison writes:
Ed: During 1988 we purchased a farm on Jay Bird Ridge which ran into Gradyville which included the site of the Ed Diddle house. Our son in law Robby Shelton, daughter Tammy Shelton-Morrison, spouse Shirley Morrison and I picked up many square nails from the remains of the Ed Diddle house. We still have many of those nails.
We later sold the farm to the Gists. I'm sure the site of the house can be determined in Gradyville/Jones Chapel Ridge.-Bobby D. Morrison

100 years ago: The opening of the Gradyville State Bank

Introduction: This 100 years ago chronicles the beginning of the Gradyville State Bank. But deeper down is perhaps, introspectively, the ultimate testament to the basic humility of Adair Countians and their unwillingness to brag, to use hyperbole, to speak too highly of their accomplishments, get the Big Head, or otherwise use unseemly Madison Avenue techniques to raise themselves above others, even if such methods might draw hundreds more Canadian tour busses to our shores. It is as clear as the complexion on our collective unblemished face. Else, why is there such an obvious lack of weathered, 100 year old signs at the entrances to the Adair County proclaiming, "Visit Dirigo, Adair County, KY, home of Kentucky's best telephone system for a community of it's size." But counties with a lesser self-effacing nature would have bragged about that epic achievement, revealed by "Jim" along with milestones in the communications unequalled in the history of mankind, when the wires of telephony were strung from Dirigo to Bliss and finally to the capital of Adair County, Columbia. Nor is there any bragging today, about the model network of Oliver Chilled Turning Plow dealerships in the shire, surely the agricultural equivalent of the first Holstein cow to arrive in Adair County, and possibly the prime impetus elevating Adair County to its lofty status among the rich agricultural lands of the world. Thanks, Lord, for our unequalled humility, when we would be so justified in putting on airs. CM

By "Jim"

In the February 1, 1911 News, the Gradyville correspondent, Mr. W.M. Wilmore, noted that "The work is about all completed on the Bank building at this place" and that the doors would open for business on February 1st. An ad on the same page of the News read thus:

Query: Is Ed Diddle, Chautauqua speaker, Ed Diddle, coach?

CM just received this letter from a very shy reader, who has a question which gives rise to a Capital Idea, which will have the Canadian Tour Busses at least flocking to storied Gradyville, KY, if not also to Columbia, and once and for all establishing the Gradyville Board of Trade as marketing geniuses: Capitalizing on the fame of one of Gradyville's greatest legends, Ed Diddle. The proof, of course, will be in the opening of Gradyville's first hotel or bed and breakfast, the first Diddle House Restaurant, first Mt. Matney Ski Lift, or first transmontane Zip Line from ridge top to ridge top. Shy Reader writes:
Just read the article by "Jim" about the 1922 performance in Columbia and the mgr. was young Ed Diddle. Is that WKU's "Uncle Ed" Diddle? Having graduated from Centre College after playing basketball at Columbia High School, he then coached at Monticello H.S. according to his online biographies. I am no expert on Mr. Diddle, but a certain editor of this online publication has a brother-in-law also named Jim, Richards, that is, who could set us all straight with his knowledge of Mr. Ed Diddle. What do you think? Shy reader
To set the record straight, and not wishing to beat about the bush, we'll call on all of Jim Richards brother in laws, including the editor of "It's Just for a Smile News," and his sisters-in-law, Fay McKinley of Columbia, and Jean Cravens to get Jim Richards to comment.
