Adair geography lessons get deeper, with one on Hooterville

About: Tarter, Adair Co., KY finally located

To "Jim" via CM:

How about any latest news from Hooterville, Jim? I believe it was out Tarter way. I recall seeing it on a map. I believe there is a Hooterville Road still in use in Eastern Adair Co. Could Hooterville have a connection to Hoot Owl Hollow, which lies east of Gentry's Mill Road, south of Santo Road?

Baby So Soft campaign will help Kosair newborns

Mother's experience there moves her to help mothers who cannot afford the softer blankets which are more comforting to the precious new ones - and to their mothers, who are are stressed for worry over their 'little miracle babies'
By Monica Rodgers-Shuffett

It is hard to fathom how much a blanket can help a baby, but believe me - it really does. My son, Avery spent 4 weeks at Kosair Children's Hospital. During our stay- I would sit at the hospital for 14-16 hours per day. I would wrap my little Avery in his own soft blanket and cuddle up to him. He would sleep soundly while I cried and rocked him. The blanket was as much comforting to me as it was to him.

Walter Murley: Some flags around Columbia, KY need attention

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have noticed several American flags around Columbia needing attention. Flag at City Hall needs replacing and the one at the old courthouse is tangled in the rope. I have also noticed several at different places that need attention. Springtime is just around the corner. If people could check their flags and replace them if they need attention it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Gentrys Mill is a few communities NE of Youngs Mill

About: Map of Adair Co., KY sparks interest in Gentrys Mill

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Youngs Mill was located in closer proximity to Ozark and Joppa than it was to Gentrys Mill. I am not as familiar with the community of Gentrys Mill but it is a few communities northeast away from Youngs Mill.

Someone had misidentified the Freedom Cemetery as being located in the Gentrys Mill community on Findagrave.com. It is my understanding that the Freedom Cemetery is located in the Freedom community which is near Roy, White Oak, and Ozark. Freedom is located closer to these communities than it is to Gentrys Mill.

Wants to know more about community of Tarter, Adair Co., KY

About: 1897 Map of Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

This 1897 map is a wonderful artifact of Adair County's geography and history. It is interesting to note the changes of spelling of communities in over a century's time! Many of the spellings of communities in 1897 are not standard contemporary spellings of the same communities.

I would like to know where the community of Tarter in Adair County was located. No one with whom I have spoken knows anything about this community. I presume the Tarter community was located in the proximity of Ozark.

Thank you, Columbia and Adair County

Twenty nine outstanding collegiate cycling teams found a home in Adair Co., KY, over the past weekend, and many of them plan to return. Lindsey Wilson Coach David Grigsby commends 'incredibly gracious hosts.' Coach Grigsby hopes a similar event can be held next year. -CM

By David Grigsby, Lindsey Wilson Cycling Coach

Columbia and Adair county did more than just open its arms to our program, our home race, and the visiting cyclists. Columbia and Adair county reached out and welcomed our event and our visitors with open hearts and kind words of praise and encouragement.

I cannot say enough good things about both the Purdy Church and the Kellyville Church. Both of these wonderful congregations allowed us to come into their homes, use their facilities, their property, and were incredibly gracious hosts.

Letter: Security rules on car keys at ACJC needs re-thinking

Letter: Security rules on car keys at ACJC I think need re-thinkingThe prohibition on taking keys in the building presents serious problem to unaccompanied drivers going to new Courthouse to get Driver's Licenses

I was at the new Adair County Justice Center the other day to get my driver's license renewed. The facility is truly beautiful. I do, however, have issues with the security rules: No guns, knives, lighters.

Ok, that is one rule I agree with completely. I think cell phones should be turned off instead of left in the car, but I can live with that one too.

Mike Watson offers possible source of name for Craycraft, KY

About: Craycraft, Adair Co., KY, Near Oak Grove, Ozark, New Concord

By Mike Watson

Why was Craycraft so named? In searching for community and post office information for An Adair County, Kentucky History, volume 1, which included many locations in the county, I was unable to determine exactly how the post office came to have that name.

One theory is that it was named for a local farmer, Charles Craycraft, who married in Adair County to Florence Bryant in 1883. He was born in Greenup County, KY in 1840, and died in Schuyler County, Illinois in 1920, a veteran and pensioner of the Civil War. It is interesting to note that on the marriage record in Adair County, Charles' age was listed as 22, but all records found give his birth year as 1840.

Florence was born in 1865 and was living in Dakota County, Nebraska in 1930. They had four children, three of whom lived: Lyman, William, and Carlie. -Mike Watson

1897 Map of Adair Co., KY sparks interest in Gentrys Mill

About: 1897 Map of Adair Co.,KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks to Gene Jessee for that map, it is amazing to see what the towns and sites were called over 100 years ago! One thing that intrigued me was Gentry's Mill.

To me, that looks like it would be about the same site as Young's Mill?

In "The Brier Domain", the book written by Charles Garnett Young, Sr., he says that the Young's Mill was built during the civil war - which was 1861-1865, right - and originally built by William F. Montgomery and his brother Quintillan.

It was William F. Montgomery's daughter who couldn't find any white flour in the community to bake her wedding cake, and so the legend goes that her father built the mill. But, where was Gentry's Mill - does anyone know anything about it?
