Derek Cape, Alex Ponich are MSU Players of the week
By Chris Megginson, CU Sports Information Director LOUISVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University's Alex Ponich and Lindsey Wilson College's Derek Cape are the Mid-South Conference Baseball Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday, March 8, 2010. Ponich was selected as the MSC Hitter of the Week, while Cape earned MSC Pitcher of the Week. The conference's weekly honor is the first of the season for both Ponich and Cape. Ponich batted .412 with a pair of home runs and five runs batted in. The Kelowna, British Columbia, senior, added 10 runs, two doubles and a triple while helping the Tigers to a 4-3 week. Ponich hit safely in all but one of Campbellsville's games during the week. He blasted his third home run of the season in the Tigers' final game of the week in a 14-4 win over Berea (KY) College. Campbellsville is 7-6 this season.Cape hurled a complete-game no-hitter against Davenport (Mich.) University. The Columbia, KY, sophomore, struck out six and allowed just two base runners - one with a walk and the other on an error - in the Blue Raiders' 5-0 win.Earlier in the week, Cape allowed two runs on two hits in four innings of work in a 5-4 win over No. 16-ranked Union (KY) College. Cape did not figure in the decision against Union.Cape concluded the week with a 1.64 earned run average in 11 innings pitched.
