Questions concerning Columbia, Bank Robbery re-enactment

About: The James Gang: Why no response?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Ed - knowing that you have great insight in all matters of concern, I have pondered on two questions concerning the James Gang and Columbia. First, other than the folks in their home state, do any other communities honor them with any functions, and secondly, why do we honor a robbery and murder with a special day?

A request for prayer for a beloved family member

Sue Cravens Embree, has endured so much from seemingly relentless ravages of cancer. While it has taken its toll on her body, her spirit and cheerfulness never wane, and she remains an inspiration to her family and all who know her. She is the wife of Gary Embree, and the daughter of Jean Waggener Cravens and the late Dr. Paul J. Cravens, all of Indianapolis and Greenwood, IN; and the granddaughter of Granville and Fronia Cravens of Sano and E.P. and Audrey Cheif Waggener of Columbia, along with dozens of other Adair County relatives. Now, she is facing yet another round of challenges and she, and her family, ask for prayers. A cousin, Sue Cravens Stivers, was moved by her letter and suggested sharing it on CM. Here is Sue Embree's update, in her own words. Please hold her in your prayers. -ED WAGGENER

To all. Please keep us in your prayers

We went to IU Med Ctr today. Met with surgeon who did my melanoma surgery back in Dec. PetScan showed that lymph node (2 yrs ago breast cancer and had 2 wks radiation for then) is now enlarged. They did biopsy on it today. Will have results next wk. Will see surgeon next Friday for results on this. He said may be breast cancer or may be melanoma.

Jim Garner writes of Judge Baker account of 'Gate' story

An 1898 account of story of 'Open the Gate' Conover. He quotes from article from 1898 edition of Adair County News and also gives the opinion that Judge Baker would have had nothing to do with re-enactment of the robbery

By Jim Garner

Five-score and eleven years ago, no less a personage than Judge Herschel Clay Baker laid before the public the details of how William "Open-the-gate" Conover earned that sobriquet as well as the serendipitous after-effect of the encounter with the outlaws.

The brief excerpt below, transcribed directly from the original source, is from a lengthy article Judge Baker penned for the Adair County News. It appeared in the April 27, 1898 edition, two days before the 26th anniversary of the robbery.

Free Kitten: A Tiffany Hadley rescue

Oh Ed,

Me and my abandoned animals... I just can't pass them up.

Eddie and I were on our way home from Russell Springs yesterday and found this little kitty by the side of the road.

It hadn't been hit, it was just very cold, wet, and hungry. I think it had survived the rough band of storms we had.

Concerning the Education of Charles Marshburn, Incomer: More on the James Gang; "Open the Gate, Conover"; and the subtle nuance to tell the difference between the James Gang which robbed the Bank of Columbia and the Rock and Roll gang led by the unfortunate Joe Walsh
The James Gang?

By Jerry Marshall

Funny you should mention "Open the Gate, Conover."

Growing up, I was told the story of the James gang leaving, I assumed, the Bank of Columbia robbery, or they could have been coming to rob.

The James Gang? Why no response?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Since I have not had any response to my inquiry about the James Gang riders in Columbia, I am taking it that it is a secret, closed, society. Am I correct?

s/Charles Marshburn

By no means. Adair Countians are not prone to talk at random, to give opinions and facts without serious reflection. At this very moment, several respected historians, all with opinions which are poles apart, are researching your question. For a fact, just one aspect of the robbery, the exact location of the "Open the Gate, Conover," gate is being debated. It was on the "Columbia to the Greasy Creek settlements" road, somewhere near the State Park, Highway 55 South Road, Columbia, KY. At least two locations, almost as many as the authenticated birthplaces of Abraham Lincoln are candidates. In due time, the information will be revealed. In the meantime, for you and those eager to learn about the glorious history of Adair County, there is the Adair County Genealogical Society, which meets each first Monday at 6:00pmCT, at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY. A $15 membership, gets a year's subscription to the quarterly Adair County Review which is worth the dues, whether you've the gumption to make it to the meetings or not. -EW

Birds of Kentucky: Pileated Woodpecker

Master Woody
Photographer Tony Harvey submitted this great shot of a pileated woodpecker to the ColumbiaMagazine pool at Flickr.

Tony says,
"We've had some new neighbors moved in nearby, this young male Pileated is one of two who've taken up residence on a adjoining farm, along with their parents who occasionally wander onto the farm here in the Tabor community.

Their call or song is almost primeval sounding. They're cousins to the Ivory Bill that is reportedly been seen in Arkansas in recent years once thought to have be extinct . June 09"
