Powell-Waggener vows exchanged May 24, 2009 Click on Headline for full story and photos, links At 2:00pmET on May 24th, 2009, on Sixth Street, Shelbyville, KY, just outside the coffeeshop they met, Teresa Jane Powell and Thomas Marcum Waggener were wed with about 100 close family members and friends in attendance. The event was short and low key. the couple had no wedding party but were married by Tony Heitzman. Abigail Estes was the ring bearer and Hannah Avery, Teresa's Niece, was the flower girl. The quiet section of Sixth Street in between Main And Washington proved a lovely setting for the event as the threat of rain held off with enough time for the nuptials. The couple had met 4 years prior just months after Sixth and Main Coffeehouse opened to the caffeine needy public of Shelbyville, KY. At the time, Waggener was working the bar as part owner in the business and Teresa was working as a lawyer for the state in Child Protective services. The two became good friends but their romance did not blossom until nearly two years had passed. Tom was finishing his Masters in Folk Studies at Western Kentucky University and Teresa was continuing her education with a masters in Spirituality from Bellarmine College. Several out of town guests were in attendance including Tom's long time friend Will Foust and wife Kim, Patrick and Lydia Jackson of Knoxiville, Butch Ross of Chattanooga, and Jamie and Krista Williamson of Cincinnati. Waggeners, Chelfs, Avery's. Ortons, Deveney's and more were in attendance for the family of the bride and groom. The reception was held two blocks away at the Shelby County Community Theatre. There was wine from Smith-Berry winery in Newcastle Ky, cheese and appetizers from Catering by Kate, and, oh, so many pies baked by the loving hands of many of those in attendance. Teresa and Tom share an affinity for homemade pies and wanted a selection of pies baked by the guests rather than the traditional white wedding cake. The attendees proved more than capable of filling the wedding cake void with more than 40 pies of all shapes and flavors to choose from. After the reception, the couple had a short honeymoon in Madison, IN, where they walked and visited some historic places. Mostly they rested.Tom is still involved with Sixth and Main Coffeehouse but his days are occupied mostly with the runnings of Main Street Bikes, a business he and Teresa started nearly two years ago. Teresa now works for Kentucky Refugee Ministries in Louisville, KY, assisting recent refugees with citizenship and family applications.
