A request for prayer for a beloved family member

Sue Cravens Embree, has endured so much from seemingly relentless ravages of cancer. While it has taken its toll on her body, her spirit and cheerfulness never wane, and she remains an inspiration to her family and all who know her. She is the wife of Gary Embree, and the daughter of Jean Waggener Cravens and the late Dr. Paul J. Cravens, all of Indianapolis and Greenwood, IN; and the granddaughter of Granville and Fronia Cravens of Sano and E.P. and Audrey Cheif Waggener of Columbia, along with dozens of other Adair County relatives. Now, she is facing yet another round of challenges and she, and her family, ask for prayers. A cousin, Sue Cravens Stivers, was moved by her letter and suggested sharing it on CM. Here is Sue Embree's update, in her own words. Please hold her in your prayers. -ED WAGGENER

To all. Please keep us in your prayers

We went to IU Med Ctr today. Met with surgeon who did my melanoma surgery back in Dec. PetScan showed that lymph node (2 yrs ago breast cancer and had 2 wks radiation for then) is now enlarged. They did biopsy on it today. Will have results next wk. Will see surgeon next Friday for results on this. He said may be breast cancer or may be melanoma.

We got results from biopsies on 3 possible melanomas that were done this wk. One on my stomach and 2 on my back. The 2 on my back are close together and above where melanoma was removed in Dec. One of the 2 on my back is melanoma. One on stomach is okay. I will have surgery to remove the melanoma. Not sure when. When we see surgeon next Friday, he said he will have results back from neck biopsy done today.

He said that if neck biopsy results show melanoma, he'll operate on my back and neck during the same operation. If neck biopsy shows breast cancer, he'll just operate on my back and I'll see breast cancer oncologist for treatment options on my breast cancer.

Good News!!! Results from MRI that I had last wk on my brain and neck showedeverything okay. That's a real blessing. Both breast cancer and melanoma go to the brain. These cancers go other places too, but this is one of the places both cancers like to travel to - a very good blood source.

Please pray for us. This is so hard for Gary. Today, they were doing needle biopsies on my neck. You may not know this, but there are soooooo many nerves in your neck and when they stick the needle in to get fluid from enlarged lymph node, or whatever, they sometimes hit a nerve here and there. They cannot see the nerves and try to be as careful as they can, but when a nerve is hit, it's like nothing I've ever felt before in my life. It sends pain down your arm, into your shoulder, down into your chest, across your neck, and so on.

They do their best, but Gary was holding my hand. They kept asking me if I was okay. They could see an arm or my neck flinch. They should've asked Gary if he was okay. When it hurt, I squeezed his hand pretty hard. When done, I asked if the feeling had come back to his hand yet. He just smiled and said everything is okay. He's my sweetie.

Dr. Touloukian is my surgeon. After 2 other drs. had tried and seemed like the "lump" wasn't giving up much fluid, they said Dr. T. had seen the pet scan and had a good idea exactly where to insert the needle, so he wanted to try too. I said sure, why not? Everybody wants a shot at me. He said he needed a "22". As he was leaving the room, I told him that I hoped he wasn't talking about a weapon, a gun. He laughed and said, No, that's the needle size. He said it's a bigger needle than they were using. I said, "a bigger needle?" They all laughed. It was a fun time for all. He did get more out of the nasty lump. I'm going to pray for nothing in the lump, but we'll have to wait and see.

Just wanted you all to know that the melanoma was not "missed" during Dec. surgery. Can't remember what Dr. called it, but he said it sometimes happens with melanoma. He excised a good sized place, including well outside the original melanoma. My very own "Dr. Gary" discovered the 2 new places on my back.

Will let you know what's going to happen. We go next Fri. for results and hopefully a schedule to get this removed.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Love,

s/Gary and Sue
