COLUMBIA MAYOR PAT BELL was one of some 100 in attendance for the Columbia-Adair County and Lindsey Wilson Communities welcome for Coach Chris Oliver, just named to head the football program at Lindsey. Mayor Bell told him that all he would have to do would be "to be half as good as the band." Along with the football program, Lindsey Wilson will add a marching band program, to be headed by Tim Allen, the legendary leader of the Adair County Marching band. "I told him we'd be able to cheer for a great football team and have the best half-time show in the NAIA, and that I was certainly looking forward there September 4, 2010," referring to the first game for the Blue Raiders.

by Geniece Leftwich Marcum,
1995, Senior Quest Magazine #2

Kathleen Porter may not be as much in the spotlight today as she was a few years ago but she is still well remembered in this area as matriarch of Porter's Restaurant in Sulphur Well. Poor health forced her to retire from her business in the mid-seventies.

Letter: Because of smoke addiction, price no deterrent to habit

"Tobacco is very addictive. Most smokers will tell you that they wish they had never started; however, they continue to smoke due to the addiction. The cost of the cigarette will not matter" -AMY PIKE
Agrees with Scotty Carter: "Thinks higher taxes means less use not absolutely true"

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I have to agree with Mr. Carter on this issue. Raising the taxes on tobacco products is not the answer to stopping or deterring it's use. You are simply targeting a specific group of people to tax rather than tax everyone as a whole.

Letter: Higher tax deterrent to beginning smokers

About: Thinks those addicted will buy cigarettes regardless of price

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I agree that those addicted to cigarettes may continue to buy them regardless of the price. However, a strong hope with raising the tax is that perhaps those just experimenting or not fully addicted (our young people) would think twice about purchasing them if the cost were higher. Kicking the habit is really tough - not becoming "in the habit" would be far easier.

Kentucky National Guard soldiers rescue teens from icy water

Vehicle was filled with water, temperature was 10 degrees when rescue in Daviess County made by guardsmen on duty in ice storm relief

From Commonwealth News Center

Sgt. Matthew S. Hamilton and Sgt. Michael A. Clary of Headquarters Company, 206th Engineers, assisted local law enforcement with pulling the victims from the water after the vehicle they were riding in slid off of the roadway and into the creek.

"We monitored the sheriff's radio all night, waiting for them to actually call us for anything they needed help with," said Clary. "We heard them (on the radio) and (the authorities) couldn't figure out how to get to them," he said.
