Letter: Because of smoke addiction, price no deterrent to habit "Tobacco is very addictive. Most smokers will tell you that they wish they had never started; however, they continue to smoke due to the addiction. The cost of the cigarette will not matter" -AMY PIKE Agrees with Scotty Carter: "Thinks higher taxes means less use not absolutely true" To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I have to agree with Mr. Carter on this issue. Raising the taxes on tobacco products is not the answer to stopping or deterring it's use. You are simply targeting a specific group of people to tax rather than tax everyone as a whole. Tobacco is very addictive. Most smokers will tell you that they wish they had never started; however, they continue to smoke due to the addiction. The cost of the cigarette will not matter. If someone has an addiction, whether it be alcohol, drugs, or tobacco, they will continue to use support that addiction regardless of the price. Someone has to want to quit themselves and the government will not be successful in forcing this. Look at the number of illegal drug users who have been arrested numerous times, that still does not deter them from using the drug. I realize that we are in a crisis with our state budget. However, if you are going to raise taxes, raise it on something that will effect everyone, not just a targeted group of people such as smokers. s/Amy Pike This story was posted on 2009-02-07 03:22:21
