Big Rig Big League sportswriter goes to Liberty for Applefest

CM contributing sportswriter becomes festival, music critic; meets Ronnie McDowell; critques performance. Liberty was celebrating 200th birthday
With one photo
By Big Al Owens

On Saturday, I loaded up Sheila (the wife) and my son Wichita for the short trek to Liberty, KY. We took my 1976 Mercury Monarch for this fantastic voyage. As we neared Casey County our senses detected the sweet aroma of apple pie.

The streets of Liberty were filled with booths offering food, novelties, and any other yard sale item that you could imagine. We had a great time walking amongst the many people that had traveled to Liberty's 200th birthday bash!

Feedback: Eastern Kentucky Childcare can help

Response to: Reader wants Latch Key program in Adair County

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would also encourage any parent who has questions about child care or information on helping to pay for child care to contact the Eastern Kentucky Child Care Coalition at 800-354-3703 or visit their website at ekccc.org. This is the child care resource and referral agency that serves Adair County. This agency can offer assitance on what options are avialable to families and even work with anyone interested in starting a child care program, either in their home or as a free standing business. Each county of the state is served by an agency like EKCCC. For a list of those agencies and counties served, visit www.kentuckypartnership.org and click on the link for Child Care Resource and Referral.

Former CU president recalls university's struggles, its future

By Joan C. McKinney, news and publications coordinator

Dr. W.R. "Randy" Davenport, president of Campbellsville College from 1969 to his retirement in 1992, discussed where Campbellsville University has been and where she is going at the institution's annual Heritage Day September 24, 2008 in Ransdell Chapel.

His address was titled "Hitherto" which he cited when Samuel set up a stone as a memorial spot to God and named it Ebenezer, which meant up to now."Up to now, God has helped us," Davenport said.

Rev. Joey N. Welch essay to read while Chris finishes Chapter Six

As we wait for Chris Bennett to put the finishing touches on: Chapter Six of Rivermen of the Cumberland. Last week he left readers in the worst state of suspension since the good guy's were holed up behind a rock, surrounded by villainous outlaws at a Saturday night Rialto Theatre serial, and we were left in a panic to make sure we had the 15 cents for a ticket to see how the good guys escaped.
"I was at a loss for words, we were out of gas, it was getting late in the day and we had nowhere to stay the night. We had three choices; we could camp out at their gas pumps until they opened the next morning. We could go through the lock and hope to find gas closer to Nashville, or we could try to make it back to Lake Wood Marina, a few miles upstream. We decided to go with the latter. We would try and make it back to Lake Wood. I started the boat and headed northeast not knowing how the day's adventure would end."
In the meantime, there's a somewhat related Sunday article about William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, and the memory of his name. It was first published in the Hart County Herald, written by and reprinted with permission of the author in CM, first on April 27, 2007, and again today:

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Cumberland, Sweet William, and more
ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor
HOW WILL YOUR NAME BE REMEMBERED?

By Rev. Joey N. Welsh

How often do people in our age take the long view of life decisions and their consequences? How often do we look beyond our current needs, or even our current desires and cravings? I fear the answer is that many people give little heed to what the immediate costs of their decisions might be, let alone how the consequences can continue to echo even beyond the bounds of their mortal lives.

Every time I read a tragic story of personal or family destruction related to addiction to methamphetamines or Oxycontin, I wonder how the folks involved could ever have imagined that chapter in their lives ending happily. And when I read about people blown to bits in meth lab explosions, I wonder if they ever thought about the name they would leave behind for any kids lucky enough to survive the trauma.

THEATRE: Abraham Lincoln at KY Repertory Theatre

Note on: Another man's Lincoln: John Drinkwater's Abraham Lincoln at Kentucky Repertory Theatre, Horse Cave, KY
Last week's review was on Cash on Delivery by Michael Cooney.

A review by Robert Stone

Earlier this year at Kentucky Repertory Theatre we saw One Man's Lincoln. Now they are in the middle of the run of another man's Lincoln. Wade Hall's play gave us a look at Abe from the upclose observations of his friend and law partner. This play is by the English poet and dramatist John Drinkwater who only knew America from across the Atlantic.

Tom Chaney No. 177. Sept. 28, 2008: Doc Holliday

Of writers and their books. Book review by Tom Chaney of Doc Holliday by Matt Braun. Last week's column: Errors and Omissions by Paul Goldstein

By Tom Chaney
bookstore@scrtc.com

Doc Holliday and the Elephant

Matt Braun is one of my favorite western writers. I have decided that my fondness for him arises from his rather successful attempts to achieve verisimilitude -- that is to create the appearance of life as it actually was. The success of any writer's effort is not so much how closely he or she hews to the truth as it existed, rather how much the writer succeeds in convincing the reader that the writer hews to the way things were.

Letter: Reader wants Latch Key program in Adair County

Assistance for young families needed in these difficult economic times; public help for day care is needed, writer says.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

With the current economic conditions as they are, young families are finding it more dfficult each week to keep up. Groceries, gasoline, utilities have all increased however paychecks have not increased at the same rate and there is only so much a family can cut back on to make ends meet.

I would suggest that the Adair County Board of Education seriously consider bringing back the "Latch Key Program." This would be a huge financial assistance to the young parents that must work but are finding it more and more difficult to afford day care for their children for the 30 minutes before school and the couple hours after school.
