Letter: Reader wants Latch Key program in Adair County

Assistance for young families needed in these difficult economic times; public help for day care is needed, writer says.

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

With the current economic conditions as they are, young families are finding it more dfficult each week to keep up. Groceries, gasoline, utilities have all increased however paychecks have not increased at the same rate and there is only so much a family can cut back on to make ends meet.

I would suggest that the Adair County Board of Education seriously consider bringing back the "Latch Key Program." This would be a huge financial assistance to the young parents that must work but are finding it more and more difficult to afford day care for their children for the 30 minutes before school and the couple hours after school.

My daughter and her husband pay $80 a week and both of their children spend the majority of the day in public school (kindergarden and pre-school). Day care facilities are needed; however, they come at a huge cost to the young parents who sometimes are making just above the weekly cost of day care but not enough to get ahead. My children grew up in a school district that not only provided a good public school education to the children but also assisted the parents.

While listening to the news it would appear the economy issue is only going to get worse before getting better and the young families as well as the elderly citizens are going to be hit the hardest.

Please advocate for a "Latch Key Program" for Adair County children and their parents. The cost of day care is a huge financial burden to alot of parents.

Thank you for your time.

s/Susan Howery
