Together, House Bill 564 and Senate Bill 216, both passed through legislative committees this morning, will make voting easier, expand our existing audit process, set a hard deadline for transition to universal paper ballots, add legal protections for election workers, and codify in law our existing practice of not connecting our election machines to the internet."

Letter: Options for dealing with black vultures

By Nick Roy, Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources
Adair County Cooperative Extension Service

Black Vulture roosts have been an issue affecting multiple landowners for several years. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife provides the following information for options for landowners and farmers: fw.ky.gov/Wildlife/Pages/Problems-with-Vultures.

Another option is the use of an effigy to deter roosts. A dead black vulture has been shown to work very well but individuals can also construct their own fake effigy. forestry.ca.uky.edu/files/forfs18-03 (PDF).

LWC: Inaugural Multicultural Retreat for Campus Community

By Venus Popplewell
LWC Director of Public Relations

"We need to get uncomfortable being uncomfortable."

That was the message delivered by Leon Ellison during his keynote presentation at LWC's first-ever Multicultural Retreat on Saturday, February 26, 2022, in the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship.

"Many times a certain language comes up that makes people uncomfortable," said Ellison, who serves LWC as an assistant professor of counseling and human development. "If I said the term white guilt, it makes people uncomfortable. If I use the term privilege, it makes people uncomfortable. But it makes people uncomfortable because we don't have the correct definitions. When we have the correct definitions and the correct terms it helps us to see things a different way."

According to event coordinator Catherine Wibbels, the purpose of the Multicultural Retreat is to develop a greater understanding of what it means to be diverse; to accept the diversity of others; and to acknowledge our own diversity and unconscious biases as well as the commitment to bringing awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion to the LWC campus culture. The Multicultural Retreat was the final event in LWC's Black History Month celebrations.

Parton, a widely recognized icon in the entertainment industry, established the reading initiative in 1995 because her father could not read and write.

Kentucky Color: Health Threat

By Billy Joe Fudge

The days started getting longer in mid-January and it became apparent that Greenhills was becoming a local sleepover location for Black Vultures. Then and now, just before the sun begins to sink below the horizon, dozens of drowsy, Darth Vaders begin circling unnervingly low overhead.

As you can imagine, this is a bit more than unsightly, a bit more than a fussy, bullying Bluejay or a flock of Starlings vacuuming up a $150.00 worth of Fescue seed freshly scattered on your lawn. Now we all know that scavengers are necessary members of our ecosystem, but aggressive Black Vultures, according to some, are a threat to our local, non-aggressive Turkey Buzzards, and our back yards turning white from the result of their roosts are potential health hazards.

Some have been using fireworks at dusk which just moves them from one back yard to another. We can't kill them because they are protected. What options do we have? Can the health department or some other agency with responsibilities in this area help us get rid of these unwanted night guests?
