Tommy Druen: Growing up in small places Previous Column: Dogs are good for people By Tommy Druen When I was in sixth grade, Martha Wilkinson, who was Kentucky's First Lady at the time, sponsored an essay contest for middle school students. I forget what the exact theme was, and I don't think it really mattered, as the real reason was to launch Martha's own gubernatorial campaign. However, it was something along the lines of how Kentuckians could succeed. Perhaps with a bit more snark than I should have possessed at 12 years old, I wrote in mine that the best way would be to move out of the state. Needless to say, neither Martha nor I won our respective contests. To this day, I remember my dad giving me constructive criticism of both how you should always know your audience and, more importantly, how I was wrong. While I'm sure I had a passing interest in it before, my love affair with Kentucky's history and its people became more earnest after that talk. As I grew older, I may have respected the Commonwealth of Kentucky more, but I still felt as those in urban areas were more likely to succeed given their plethora of opportunities, both within their school settings and in their communities. The new political landscape in South Central Kentucky House Bill 2 seems to have changed the political geography of Adair and surrounding counties. The new map was vetoed by the Governor, but his veto was quickly overridden. The bill became law in late January without the Governor's signature. However, the first legal challenge to the redistricted map was filed in Franklin Circuit Court almost immediately by the Kentucky Democratic Party. Redistricting is common after a census, and lawsuits about redistricting are not entirely uncommon. The Kentucky legislature enacted a new map on Jan 31, 2002, after the 2000 census, and these became law without challenge. In 2012, a new legislative map was signed by the Governor but then was successfully challenged in court. As a result, 2012 Kentucky elections took place under the 2002 map, and a new map was passed on Aug. 23, 2013. (For an in-depth look at 21st Century redistricting in Kentucky, see https://redistricting.lls.edu/state/kentucky. According to the new law, Adair and surrounding counties are spread among the following five districts:

Making Indian recipes at home By Linda Waggener with Jane Aaron When there's just no time nor fair weather to drive a hundred miles for Indian food it's fun to make it at home. It's very handy to have two people managing all the spices and ingredients, dishes and kitchen chaos. CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA Start with one and a half pounds of boneless skinless chicken, cut into about one-inch cubes. Cover it with the marinade from the recipe below and set it in the fridge to soak up all the spices. We (sort of) followed the recipe from Jane's suggested website, food.com. LCDHD: Vaccination is best protections against hospitalization By Sam Price Lake Cumberland District Health Department LCDHD is transitioning away from a daily brief and instead will be providing the state daily brief, which includes numbers and data for each county. State Report for 31 Jan 2022: https://chfs.ky.gov/agencies/dph/covid19/COVID19DailyReport.pdf Due to the increase in cases, LCDHD local numbers are behind and we are encouraging the public to utilize the state data moving forward. Any data we are reporting is skewed because it is incomplete. There are MANY, MANY more cases each day than we can work through in every county. Another consideration is the prevalence of at home tests in our communities. These tests, while a valuable tool, are not reportable to the health department and therefore are not calculated in any reports. LCDHD will provide the state report daily and also a summary of LCDHD specific details weekly each Monday, beginning next week. I hope this will be adequate and acceptable during this very difficult and busy time. The most important take away from this is - COVID-19 is everywhere. The best protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death remains vaccination. If you have not received your vaccinations, we encourage you to consider that. And if you have been vaccinated, but not boosted, please get boosted! 2022-02-01 07:06:15 | Comments | Printable version
