Jim's article on speeding in Columbia takes writer back in time

Jon Halsey writes:
Jim's article took me waaay back in time.

When I was just a tad we would visit my Gran and her sister in a small one traffic light town in central Ohio. They were both quite elderly at the time, at least to my puerile eyes. Occasionally a car or pick-up would pass by the front of the house which was on a main street, but at the tree lined edge of town. My how Gran and Aunt Rachel would fuss about the noise those awful "machines" made racing up and down (probably 20-25 mph).

Carol Perkins: No hesitation on invitation to Haggard Tribute

Writer surprised at new talent, Jamey Johnson and The Avett Brothers and her son asked, 'What rock have you been living under.' And when a thirtyish store clerk asked 'Who was she?' at the mention of Merle Haggard, the phrase came in handy again.
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Demons. They are circling

By Carol Perkins

When my friend said, "You want to go to Bridgestone to the Merle Haggard Tribute?" I didn't hesitate. The list of performers included stars from country and rock, so it was a chance to see those whose concerts normally might have been too "out there" for me. I would never, for instance, think of going to a ZZ Top concert, but my seeing Billy Gibbons in person was a cool as far as my grandson was concerned. Is that beard for real or a stick on?

JIM: Adair County News 92 years ago - Enforce the Law

Compiled by JIM

Automobile drivers should be required by law to slow up while passing through the square and driving upon the streets of Columbia. There have been several bad collisions in Columbia in the past fifteen days, and unless fast driving is stopped, someone is going to get killed.

The rate of speed in the corporate limits is stated in an ordinance passed by the town authorities some time ago. The town marshal should read it and then enforce it. A life is worth more than all the machines that are in this town and those that come into the town. (Transcribed from the Adair County News, October 9, 1923.)
