Celia Downey: Luncheon with friend; lessons learned
Dining with Diesel, the writer's FAT Dog: "Setting boundaries, I sternly commanded, 'git back'" which he did not do; rather he layed down and tummy crawled onto my lap while eyeing the cheese sandwich and licking his lips." - CELIA DOWNEY

By Celia Downey
Have you eaten lunch with your best friend? Always a pleasure, discussing the menu and wishing you could eat it all.
At home on my day off there was no menu, no fancy little glass plates, and no iced tumblers on a covered table.
However, there was some cheese and bread plus mayo and a few stale Lays chips. Good enough, cheese sandwich and chips, plus a Diet Coke in the can. Sitting down on the back porch step, I took the first bite of the sandwich. Such a lovely day with the sun streaming down and the birds peeping around. Anticipating the lunch I began to take a bite.
Then I heard, close in my ear, "Pant..Pant..Pant..". Looking over my right shoulder was my surprise luncheon guest, uninvited, but of course always welcome. My FAT dog, Diesel, staring intently between me and the paper plate filled with cheese sandwich and old chips.
I saw a tiny drop of saliva form on his tongue, giving away his true intent. He thought he had been invited to THE luncheon event on the sun soaked veranda overlooking the lawn.
Setting boundaries, I sternly commanded, "git back", which he did not do; rather he layed down and tummy crawled onto my lap while eyeing the cheese sandwich and licking his lips.
To satisfy him I gave him one potato chip and said "No, that is it, no more! You have eaten all day and ate the cat's food too!". Diesel interpreted this to mean "Please sit with me. Oh, you starving baby - and eat from the plate, eat it all, enjoy as it is for you and you only."
That spoiled dog promptly, but gently took the whole paper plate, sandwich and all, in his massive jaws and slowly backed down and off the porch, never breaking eye contact with me.
Not one chip moved, the cheese sandwich perched on the plate as if on a wondrous trip. Out into the yard went my lunch with Diesel who inhaled it in three bites, chips and all.
He successfully charms to achieve the desires of his appetite. After his 30 second stealing my lunch escapade, Diesel returned to the step where I hungrily sat. In consolation, he licked my face in thanks, so I got up and gave him a fresh bowl of water.
He then rolled into the shade and took an after lunch nap.
Be careful who you invite or do not invite to your luncheon.
Always bring extra cheese sandwiches in case someone unexpectedly shows up.
Don't worry if the chips are stale; they will be eaten regardless.
Graciously be prepared to have your lunch taken from you. Provide plenty of water and a nap too.
Make sure your animals always have plenty of food, water, shade, and shelter. - Celia Downey
