The Whitehurst Diaries: Winter Solstice Walk-About

'I note each Winter Solstice, not as a pagan affirmation, but in remembrance of my late father Larry's observance of the changing seasons with their complexities of weather. He greeted December 21st as 'the first day of winter'--braced for the extra labor and the watchfulness that a long Vermont winter would surely bring.' - SHARON WHITEHURST

Freezing fog has been a presence for three mornings, legacy of the weekend's erratic weather changes. Opening the curtains at what should be daybreak merely invites a spill of grey into the room. Winter Solstice: The lane slopes uphill toward our house

2016-12-21 - On Sanders Ridge, Pellyton, Adair County, KY - Photo by Sharon Whitehurst (c).
As the lane slopes uphill toward our house the valley narrows, the steep ridges move closer, holding the buildings in a wedge of open space. Jim has built a fire in his shop and the smoke rises to mingle with the grey plume drifting from the house chimney. - SHARON WHITEHURST

Fog, Black Ice, factors on first day of Winter, 2016

By Larry Smith, FM 99.9 the Big Dawg & FM 92.7 the WAVE

The first day of winter, the shortest day of the year, came in with treacherous, patchy black ice, dense freezing fog, and multiple accidents this morning on the Cumberland Parkway between Columbia and Somerset.

Details are sketchy, but at least four cars upended along that stretch of the Cumberland Parkway.

The fog freezing on the trees is beautiful, but the situation could be deadly. Drive with extreme caution today as we enter winter.
