State poised for third year of hemp research projects

State agriculture department anticipates nearly 4,500 acres of hemp planting in 2016

By Angela Blank

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky is ramping up its industrial hemp pilot projects this year to build on the research of the past two years, positioning Kentucky to develop a robust research program.

The KDA has authorized planting of nearly 4,500 acres of hemp for pilot projects this year, compared with about 900 acres of hemp production last year and 33 acres in 2014, the first year of pilot projects. Since 2015, the number of university-led research projects has more than doubled, with the scope of research expanding beyond production research into hemp utilization. The KDA is offering multi-year partnerships with processors in order to develop meaningful data on processing and marketing.

The pilot projects are intended to research the feasibility of industrial hemp in Kentucky from seed to market. Projects will study production techniques, seed varieties, processing, and potential products that could be brought to market quickly.

Adair Co. School Board Report 17 Mar 2016

Story in progress, a view updates are being added
Click on headline for more with several photo(s)

By Ed Waggener

The Adair County Board of Education heard great news on progress in its health/school nurse and school Nurse Practitioner program, on buildings and grounds, and on technology.

But it was a mixed bag on funding. On the local level, it was all positive, but Superintendent Alan W. Reed gave a grim outlook for state support. A worse case scenario, he said, would be if the governor's budget is adopted, which would result approximately $175,000 dollars per year less in 2017-18 if the administration's budget were to be adopted and phased reductions were to continue to that time. Grimes outraged at act to ending state mine safety Inspections

Today, the Kentucky Senate approved Senate Bill 297, which would eliminate state mine safety inspections.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes issued the following statement: "I am outraged that Senate Republicans would put the lives of Kentucky miners in danger. Senate Bill 297 is a slap in the face to the hundreds of miners who enter our coal mines everyday and demonstrates a complete lack of respect for the 53 miners who lost their lives in the Commonwealth in the past decade." Coal miner Roy Middleton died May 20, 2006, at Darby Mine No. 1 after an explosion at the mine in Harlan County. Reports said he died because the equipment he was provided was outdated and did not provide enough oxygen.
