By JIM

It never ceases to amaze how much found in the pages of the Adair County News stands as relevant a century and more after publication. Case in point: the following excerpt from a half-page opinion piece reprinted in the April 21, 1909 News from the Lebanon Enterprise newspaper: At the time, the prohibition issue was quickly devolving into a political battleground with both inter- and intra-party strife rampant. Said the opinion piece, in part:

Shannon Sexton: Another Wow! factor

By Shannon Sexton, Chair, PAC
Personal commentary

Bootleggers want Adair Co. to go wet? That's today's "spin" on things? I find it entertaining but far from truth unless of course they apply for Legal license and open a Legal store.

See, the truth is - when PAC first began circulating the petition, I was sent a message from a known bootlegger. Change from Wet to Moist and they'd guarantee us the win. My response: No dice.

Question this morning: Do legal sales folks need another Wow!

Caller to CM's view is that if the pro-legal sales forces win, it will be because of the story in "The Adair County Community Voice," on Wednesday, March 10, 2016 by Sharon Burton. He wonders if that will be enough. Your comments welcome

By Ed Waggener

A caller this morning, who favors Legal Sales of Alcoholic Beverages, said he fears the vote will be 400 short on the Yes side if it were taken today.

"If I'm wrong," he said, "and it wins, it will be because of Sharon Burton's story about buying whisky at a local bootleggers and how easy it is. That was a wow factor which could have turned the tide."

NYT story: Justice Dept. condemns profit-minded court policies

Here's a link to a New York Times story, Justice Dept. Condemns Profit-Minded Court Policies Targeting the Poor.

It's a story applicable to our times, when court's policies and fees make the possibility of redemption an unattainable dream, when local legislative bodies view jails as profit centers, and where parolees are prioritized for revocation depending on their presently needed "free" labor skills.

Those with a more Christian viewpoint on redemption look on in dismay realizing that incarceration is in many cases, just today's slavery. They may find comfort in the story.
