This year, the Girl Scout Troop #896 decided to honor someone who has served the Girl Scouts of Adair County for numerous years by paying for a lifetime membership for her. Mindy Cornell began with Girl Scouts as a child and as a co-leader for her child.

When she moved to Kentucky in 1996, she started a troop here that kicked off the next 19 years of volunteer service for her with Girl Scouts. Shortly after beginning her troop, she accepted the duties of "acting" Service Unit Manager, which led to taking on the full responsibilities.

As the Service Unit Manager, she planned events for all the Girl Scouts in the county as well as offered support and guidance to the leaders. She remained a service to our community until stepping down in 2015.

During her years of service, she was recognized with numerous awards, such as: Daisy Award, Appreciation Award, Accredited Leader, Juliette Award, Pillar of Support, Girl Scout Outstanding Volunteer, and the Silver Cardinal. In addition to her own awards, she is proud of her family and their awards as well.

Her daughter Cassaundra Cornell is currently the only Gold Award recipient from Adair County, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Her husband, Jeff Cornell, is a Green Knight, for his extraordinary volunteer service to Girl Scouts. The girls of Troop #896 couldn't say "Thank You" enough to Mindy for all she has done to keep Girl Scouts thriving in Adair County.

Girl Scout Troop #896 would like to thank the members of the community, not only for their cookie purchases but for their donations as well. According to the troop leaders, Annita Barnett and Cindy Ploss, they don't recall ever receiving this much in donations, making this gift possible.

About the Girl Scouts of America

As of March 12th, Girl Scouts turned 104 years old. What initially began with 18 girls has grown to over 3 million members around the world. On March 10th, Girl Scout Troop #896 held a birthday party to celebrate. In addition to the singing and cake, there was a very special present given. Every year during cookie sales, there are often donations given to the girls from members of the community that wish to help the girls without necessarily purchasing cookies. In the past, the girls of Troop #896 have voted to use the donations to show our support to the military, to our emergency personnel, and last year to help pay for the cookies that were ordered but lost in a house fire of a fellow Girl Scout.
