KY Afield Outdoors: Catch walleye and sauger from the bank

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - Many anglers would drive a few hundred miles for a chance to catch an 8-pound walleye or a limit of tasty sauger. Kentuckians only have to drive to Campbellsville and head south on KY 55 to the Tailwater Recreation Area below Green River Lake. You don't even need a boat.

"We saw walleye up to 8 pounds when we did population sampling on Jan. 15, just below Green River Lake Dam," said David Baker, stream fisheries biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "It is just impressive, we see nice fish there. We don't see as many sauger, but the ones we see are large."

Brandon Burns' numbers predict lower alcohol tax amounts

He's estimating $96,000 more or less if tax rate is competitive with nearby towns selling alcohol
Comments re article 80559 Shannon Sexton Alcohol tax revenue depends on local rate

By Brandon Burns
Personal commentary

Mrs. Sexton, I still believe your numbers are off by trying to compare Corbin alcohol sales to Columbia. I'll explain why and offer a much more realistic amount. You gave examples of town size but it is not a city vote nor will city people be the only one's purchasing the alcohol. Corbin is a unique town because it falls in two different counties, Whitley & Knox. The population of Whitley County in 2013 was 35,766 and Knox County had 31,790 residents. A total population of 67,556 for the two counties that Corbin fell in. Whitley and Knox Counties were both dry, much like London, KY & Laurel county 16 miles down the interstate. The population for Laurel county was 59,563 alone and that brings the total population for 3 counties that houses 2 colleges to a total of 127,119. Adair County is a 1/5th of that size with 25,572.

Explosion, day two: bodies found, scene opened back up

Prayers requested for the families of the victims.

By Linda Waggener

Adair County Sheriff Harrison Moss, the first law enforcement officer on the scene of Tuesday's explosion at the Mitchell Coomer home, said it was devastating. The 911 call had come in just after lunchtime from a neighbor who heard and felt the blast. Sheriff Moss said there'd been so many vehicles coming in and out that it was challenging to get the fire trucks down the road to the burning home. That's why it was closed to all but official traffic.

He spoke around 4pmCT Wednesday as he directed traffic so that dozens of officials could exit M. Coomer Road onto Highway 206 after the day and a half investigation.

Campbellsville Elementary School students make fossils

Click on headline for item with photo album

By Calen McKinney, Public Information Officer/Grant Writer Campbellsville Independent Schools (CIS), Campbellsville, KY

Campbellsville Elementary School third-graders recently learned all about fossils – and then made their own.

In Marcia Sharp’s science class, students studied fossils. To go along with that lesson, students learned how to make their own fossils in Adrienne Hash’s art class.

Students used objects such as shells, toys, plastic plants and bugs and more to make imprints in clay.

After the clay dried, students used watercolors to paint their fossils.

Carol Perkins: Tips for women

Buying while caught up in the excitement of the moment happens so often. Sometimes even to experienced shopper Carol Perkins.
Last week's column: Carol Perkins: Loves snow days, sledding, Buddy Brown's calls

By Carol Perkins

A woman should never buy shoes when her feet are swollen, buy a piece of clothing too small on the chance she will lose weight, or get a make-over at the mall without being expected to buy products.

After Christmas I like to shoe shop. Not that I need shoes, but a woman can depend on shoes to make her feel better. No matter if she weighs 120 lbs. or 220 lbs, her feet can be in style. We had driven to Cool Springs Mall in the Brentwood area, where our daughter lives, and she and I did a little shopping. I, like many women my age, headed to the Clarks shoe display.
