Shannon Sexton: Alcohol tax revenue depends on local rate

Comments re article 80543 Letter (from Mike Ellis Questions budget assumptions for alcohol tax

By Shannon Sexton - PAC Chair
Personal commentary

Mr. Ellis, the truth of the matter is, we don't know how much revenue we will received from legal alcohol sales in Adair County. Somerset taxes 4% on malt beverages, 5% on spirits and 6% on restaurant sales. Different places have different taxing rates which are set by their local governments.

Billy Joe Fudge: Appreciates Mike Ellis' concern for accuracy

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Mr. Ellis, I understood from Shannon's use of the $500,000 figure was that it was an example of how the process would work. If I understood what she was saying, she could just as easily have begun with $100,000 or $10,000. I, for one, appreciate your concern for accuracy in statements made by public officials. - Billy Joe Fudge

Letter: Questions budget assumptions for alcohol tax

Mike Ellis writes:
Ed, I would like to ask a question about the budget that was referred to in a article written which I have copied below. [Note: we've provided the link to the original article, instead. --editor]

A member of the PAC said that if the Police budget was $500,000, and we had enough sales to receive $500,000 in tax money how helpful it would be, but at a 4% tax rate for alcohol sales, would we not have to sell about $12.5 MILLION dollars a year to receive that much tax dollars from alcohol sales? I really can't imagine taking that much money from Adair Co. economy, that breaks down to sales over a MILLION a month. Its hard to imagine that amount of money spent on alcohol.

What concerns me is Kids going without, families going without, local merchants losing out, as I see it the only winners will be the alcohol stores' owners. Thank you. --Mike Ellis

Mary Bardin: Westlake will be an asset to TJ Samson

Many of staff have been a part of Westlake since 1981

By Mary Bardin
Personal commentary

I attended the board meeting tonight expecting to hear the great news that TJ Samson had agreed to purchase the hospital, as that was the rumor. However, there are still a few details to be finalized.

Westlake Hospital has such a dedicated staff. Many have been a part of Westlake since 1981, and will certainly be an asset to TJ Samson.

I attended a board meeting that was advertised as open to the public.

I was disappointed to see so few people present from the community. I think Adair County should be supportive of our hospital and show our appreciation for the great efforts of the board and administration. The staff would like to know Adair County is there for them.

Sincerely,
- Mary Bardin
