Shannon Sexton: Alcohol tax revenue depends on local rate Comments re article 80543 Letter (from Mike Ellis Questions budget assumptions for alcohol tax By Shannon Sexton - PAC Chair Personal commentary Mr. Ellis, the truth of the matter is, we don't know how much revenue we will received from legal alcohol sales in Adair County. Somerset taxes 4% on malt beverages, 5% on spirits and 6% on restaurant sales. Different places have different taxing rates which are set by their local governments. What we can do, is make an educated guess based on neighboring areas and their revenue intake. The city of Corbin has a population of 7,368 (2013), Columbia is approximately 61% the size of Corbin with a population of 4,510 (2013). Corbin raked in $721,000 in alcohol tax revenue during the time period listed in the article. All things considered, we could stand to collect $440,000. It's not $721,000 however I'm sure the taxpayers of Adair County would welcome the relief. In regards to your concern for kids doing without, families doing without and local merchants losing out - unfortunately these heart wrenching things take place every day in our community as well as others. The stark reality is children being neglected in a county that has illegal alcohol sales will most likely continue to be neglected in a county that has legal alcohol sales. Families doing without may finally be able to move above the poverty line if legal alcohol sales helps to bring new industry and business. Merchants locally are already losing out because their customers travel to neighboring counties to purchase alcohol and patron other merchants while there. I understand most of us are afraid of change and what we don't know. When an area is stagnant, something different must happen in order for growth to take place. We are desperately in need of growth on many levels. We cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results. Thank you, - Shannon Sexton - PAC Chair This story was posted on 2016-01-27 19:00:40
